Review – Donkey Kong Country Returns

Donkey Kong Country Returns
Marathon playtime with a casual audience caused one observer to remark that I was more boy than man despite my age, which possibly owed in some small part to the fact that I’d begun banging my chest after surviving a particularly hellish level.

Two straight days in the jungle have created a time machine, the latest cog in Nintendo’s flux capacitor bringing players back to the age of Super Nintendo, taking advantage of an evolved 2D palette and a long absence that brings characters back with a vibrancy I fantasized about while playing the original titles so many years ago.

Perhaps the key is that the visual seduction inspires the same level of awe now as it did then, so that even if everything new is old again, it’s hard to complain about the result.

Radiant Historia Is On The Way

Radiant Historia
Atlus sends word that the game will hit North American DS’ early next year, February 22, 2011 to be specific. As often is the case, Atlus is including a bonus with launch copies of the release, which will include an audio CD with “unique piano arrangements from composer Yoko Shimomura’s acclaimed musical score.”

My initial reaction is, ppfft, this isn’t Catherine, but I guess since the game involves time travel I’ll let this oversight slide, for now.

Meanwhile you catch a trailer after the break.

Sony Sale
Beginning tomorrow Sony is knocking down prices on 2010 digital games for PSP, PS3, and their Minis lineup by 50%, news that warrants plenty of your attention if you haven’t caught up with releases like Joe Danger or Metal Gear Solid Peace Walker – also known as one of my favorite PSP games to date.

The sale runs from November 23 until November 29, and you can catch the full list of deals after the break.

Ys: The Oath in Felghana
As always I’d like to thank everyone who took the time to enter our contest. If you didn’t all drop by we’d have to go find something else to do, and we’d really rather continue doing this instead.

This morning I entered everyone’s names into our new RandomTron 5000, which harnessed the power of science to give us our five winners.

Congratulations to Diego R., Eric, Radical Hair, Eden, and Skrams – codes have been dispatched to your in-boxes.

The RandomTron has spoken.

Your Recommended Dose of Sanrio

Sanrio
Sanrio epitomizes all things cute in Japanese culture. In fact, Sanrio/Hello Kitty was my introduction into Japanese culture. I grew up in a town populated by Japanese immigrants back in the 50’s, resulting in many Japanese stores. Sanrio was one of them, and I can remember my grandmother taking me there to get pens, pencils and various stationery for grade school.

Sanrio is currently celebrating their 50th anniversary with “Small Gift” festivals in Los Angeles and Miami and a touring pop-up store hitting select cities in the US, featuring rare collectors items only available on the tour.

Gamesugar visited Small Gift in Santa Monica, CA, held at Santa Monica Airport’s Barker Hangar. The venue is perfect for a massive festival that includes an art show, gift shop, game booths, miniature golf course, arcade station, face painting booths, and a Ferris wheel. We could barely hold it together ten feet from the entrance because everything oozed of cuteness. Most of my time was spent at the arcade station, playing retro games and yelling at the pinball machine.

Check out plenty of photos from the event at our Facebook Page.

Mickey’s Epic Spending Options

Epic Mickey
Disney’s Epic Mickey is nearly upon us, set for release on November 30th, which is like what, ten more sleeps?

To fuel potential fanaticism, PDP offers two products that you’ve likely seen already, the paintbrush Nunchuk and a WiiMote charger that doubles as a display piece. The Nunchuck can already be had from Amazon or PDP’s website for $19.99 USD, but the charger, which PDP lists for $49.99 USD is a Toys ‘R’ Us Exclusive, a phrase I haven’t heard in quite awhile, and word is that it will later become available through PDP’s site as well.

Then of course there’s still the collector’s edition of the game, which all together should help leave an epic dent in your wallet depending on just how much you love the mouse.

I remember when you could see five Mickey cartoons for a dime and get change back! Okay not really, but it sounds like something that would be true, doesn’t it?

Your Tactics Ogre Pre-Order Incentive

Tactics Ogre
Square-Enix gives a glimpse of those Tarot Cards featuring illustrations from Akihiko Yoshida for the PSP release of Tactics Ogre: Let Us Cling Together, adding word that they will be available outside of Japan, at least to those who pre-order the upcoming title from GameStop, EB Games Canada, Amazon.com or Amazon.ca – which thankfully is a pretty wide set of options to suit consumer preference.

The game’s North American release is set for February 15, 2011.
