Lazy Sunday – E3 Leftovers

E3 2012
Posting about all the games I spent time with at E3 has been an incredibe experience, which I remain entirely thankful for while winding down the task this weekend.

I hope you’ve dug our attempt at E3 coverage this year by the way, which owes a thankful shout-out to Shaun Hatton for providing some essential help during the typically crazy ride.

While it’s time to put E3 2012 to bed and get back to the business of more immediate releases, there were a few titles that warranted some words, and unfortunately many more that I haven’t caught up with as of yet.

In the spirit of lazy Sunday, I’ve rounded up a few more games I spent some time with at E3, which you can catch up with below.

Review – Corpse Party

Review Corpse Party
A “biased” review of a videogame is a hot topic in today’s Internet societies, which always seems hilarious to me: any review of any thing, whether book, film, food, business or perhaps a device which allows one’s cat to fly, will naturally be colored by the thoughts, imaginations and opinions of the reviewer.

I’m telling you this, of course, because if there’s anything I love in the world, it’s horror stories and visual novels. Tell me that a game contains either of those two elements, and I’m absolutely, positively, 100 percent in for the ride. Tell me its got both, and you could complain about bias, because I’m obviously getting to review two of my favorite things, right?

All that aside, though, Corpse Party is tremendously good, and for reasons other than my hardcore love of its themes and approach.

Your Entirely Metal Ys I & II Chronicles Contest Winners!

Ys I and II chronicles contest winners
Greetings Sugarfiends!

It’s time to announce the winners of our Ys I & II Chronicles Contest!

Last night, at the start of the wolfing hour, the Gamesugar crew ascended to the peak of a nearby mountain, placing the entries into a ceremonial bowl atop a stone pedestal – along with offerings to the forgotten Gods of old.

It wasn’t long before the clouds swirled overhead, and the faint sound of thunder grew in the distance until we were convinced that the nearing beat bore remarkable resemblance to the guitar riff from Iron Maiden’s Run to the Hills. Suddenly bolts of lightning struck the stone, forever etching three names into the splintered remains.

Congratulations to Radical Hair, Elatia-Rashiad Langford and Charles Sabers – though both Elatia-Rashiad and Charles Sabers need to drop me a line via jamie[at]gamesugar[dot]net since we don’t have your email addresses.

Your Recommended Dose of Ys I & II Chronicles

ys 1 and 2 chronicles
Among a slew of titles releasing in February that may prove well worth our time, Ys I & II will be hitting the PSP with a bonus soundtrack CD around the 15th, wrapping up the trilogy Xseed Games has brought to the handheld in North America – and clearing the way for another Falcom trilogy from Xseed in 2011 with The Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky still to come.

Xseed’s latest bit of gameplay video is more of an audio focused affair, offering a taste of the three different soundtracks available to players. Musical appreciation and nostalgia aside, it’s hard not wishing it was time for Legend of Heroes now-ish, but check it out for yourself and let me know what you think.

The View From Felghana

Ys The Oath in Felghana Review
There’s a group of lovable ne’er-do-wells that frequent the library I work at. All of them are past high school-age and their ambitions seem to center on engaging in Yu-Gi-Oh! duels, reading manga, and channeling as much time and energy as possible into playing Gaia Online. Though they might not have found their niche as productive members of society yet, the library is like a home to them, and it’s rather heartwarming to know that they’ve found a place where they fit in.

One of the members of this band of misfits always has a tattered PSP in hand, and he often uses our Internet connection to download new games via “alternative” means. Though I normally frown upon piracy, I know that purchasing new games is a luxury he can’t afford, and no degree of lecturing from me is going to stop him.

Once he discovered I was a fellow gamer, he began attempting to talk shop with me on occasion. His social and conversational skills are far from exceptional, and our discussions are usually awkward, though I would argue charmingly so. I know it probably takes a decent amount of bravery on his part to even approach me, so I’ve always tried to be as friendly as possible.

Recently he marched up over to my desk with a massive grin on his face – “Whys,” he cryptically said. I raised an eyebrow to signify that I didn’t quite follow what he was getting at, “Whys,” he repeated, “I just got the new Whys game.” At this point I deciphered that he was talking about Ys.

Ys: The Oath in Felghana
As always I’d like to thank everyone who took the time to enter our contest. If you didn’t all drop by we’d have to go find something else to do, and we’d really rather continue doing this instead.

This morning I entered everyone’s names into our new RandomTron 5000, which harnessed the power of science to give us our five winners.

Congratulations to Diego R., Eric, Radical Hair, Eden, and Skrams – codes have been dispatched to your in-boxes.

The RandomTron has spoken.

Gamesugar Contest – Ys: The Oath in Felghana

Contest Ys The Oath in Felghana
I’m confident that no other title on the PSP this year, or perhaps ever, has offered up the endurance run that is Xseed’s latest dose of Falcom’s Ys series to hit North America. I’m also certain that the Falcom faithful wasted no time in devouring the release. But while I’m grinding away on some form of a review for the game, it seemed a noble cause to try and spread the Ys agenda with a giveaway in the meantime.

Courtesy of Xseed Games, we have a chance to give five of you a digital download copy of Ys: The Oath in Felghana, pretty sweet right?

All you have to do to enter is leave a comment on this post telling us why you need a copy by 11:59 pm est on Sunday November 21, 2010.

Curious about the game after hearing some talk on the street? Did you happen to run out of blood to sell right when it released? All reasons are welcome here, because we’ll draw five names at random the following Monday afternoon and a winner could be you.
