Your Ivy the Kiwi? Contest Winner

Ivy the Kiwi?
Wow, you guys made that ridiculously hard.

First off, I want to thank everyone who entered and took time to add their fake Kiwi factoids, which ranged from ridiculously fantastic to some that I’m almost willing to believe might be true.

Deciding really left us with a narrow margin, but in the end there can be only one this time, and your winner is Shel, who opened our eyes to the horrible not-truth about the Kiwi-fruit actually being a Kiwi egg.

I’ll be getting in touch with you today about your copy of Ivy the Kiwi?, and I will likely never be able to eat a Kiwi fruit again, so thanks for that :/

Gamesugar’s Ivy the Kiwi? Contest

Ivy the Kiwi? Contest
Given my recent affection for Ivy the Kiwi?, and my subsequent belief that you should all check it out, it seemed like working out some sort of giveaway / contest was in order. So here’s what we’ve got – courtesy of XSEED Games, one of you has the chance to win a Wii copy of Ivy the Kiwi?

Sounds pretty straightforward right?

So here’s the catch – all you have to do to win, is lie to us. More specifically, I’m looking for completely fake and untrue facts about Kiwis – the bird, not the fruit.

Did sailors use Kiwis to find oranges and fight off scurvy during the little discussed war of 1926? Did the United States parachute Kiwis into the Soviet Union to gather intelligence during the Cold War? You tell us!

Leave your Kiwi Factoid in the comments of this post before 12 PM EST on Sunday September 26th, 2010. Some combination of Team Sugar will pick their favorite entry and award a winner later the following day, most likely based on how ridiculous, creative, and humorous the entry is.

Good luck!

Review – Ivy the Kiwi?

Ivy the Kiwi?
Last year’s mobile game from Prope has returned for a Wii/DS combo release, though interviews have revealed that the Wii version preceded all other concerns – and it definitely shows.

Prope Studio founder Yuji Naka’s life after Sega is easy to typecast as one focused on the control side of gaming – the way we interact with the medium, not simply via the use of new peripherals but in exploring the way tactile actions and video output work together to create new experiences. Last year that focus had me tapping on a cereal box to vibrate a WiiMote with the release of Let’s Tap, but where that release came across more as an interesting technical demonstration, Ivy the Kiwi? is less on the esoteric and more about playtime with straight-forward appeal.

More over, Ivy feels like a return to form, a game of crafted levels designed for an instantly iconic character that is unavoidably as cute as a box of puppies, and finds a welcome place alongside other Naka creations such as Sonic the Hedgehog or Nights into Dreams

Aileen caught up with XSEED Games this week to try out Ivy the Kiwi? on Wii, but also found out plenty more about the DS version as well as some info about the digital versions in the works for DSiWare and WiiWare and how they differ from the retail copies.

Thanks to the magic of audio, you can hear about it straight from XSEED Games at the show. You can also check out some video of the game after the break.

Q&A – Skeptical Cat’s Ivy the Kiwi? 101

Ivy the Kiwi
Skeptical Cat feels very ignored with all this E3 business going on around the office. All Skeptical Cat has heard this week is bullets and swords and something about the three d’s of gaming – meanwhile only Skeptical Cat seems to realize that the litter box doesn’t clean itself.

Skeptical Cat isn’t very interested in these things, but was bribed to pitch in with a shiny Natal experience pass to replace his old collar. Skeptical Cat feels that gaming needs to connect with its roots, especially in offering us more games about delicious characters – and maybe more Chu Chu Rocket, Skeptical Cat approves of more games where foolish mice are eaten.

Skeptical Cat feels that Ivy the Kiwi would taste very good, maybe even more so than a Kolibri, but Skeptical Cat feels catching one requires careful planning because Kiwi’s seem tricky.

Skeptical Cat remembered the nice XSEED rep he met when that game about cats inheriting the world came out, and went for a visit to learn more about Kiwis.

Ivy the Kiwi Mini

Ivy the Kiwi Mini
I was thumbing through the June issue of Nintendo Power today, specifically for an interview with Prope Studio founder Yuji Naka discussing his latest title, Ivy the Kiwi. The article includes a brief blurb for Ivy the Kiwi Mini, a lighter version of the game releasing for DSiWare and WiiWare after the retail release later this summer – which Amazon figures is August 24, 2010 at present.

Knowing that Japan received Ivy in both retail and digital form didn’t make that blurb surprising, but it did mention that DS owners should keep an eye out for a demo in late May. Since May is just about over, I asked our friendly neighborhood XSEED rep what the story was.

While there’s no exact date just yet, I can confirm that there will be demos for both the Wii and DS later this summer, and that the WiiWare demo will even offer a taste of multiplayer with the versus mode, but not co-op.

Now you know, and I hear knowledge is power.
