Impressions – Grey Goo

Grey Goo Preview
I recently had the opportunity to preview Petroglyph’s upcoming real time strategy title Grey Goo. The game is inspired by the hypothetical doomsday scenario of the same name, whereby self-replicating molecular machines consume all matter on Earth in order to fuel their endless reproductive cycle.

Replicated here is the usual model that sees three opposing species pitted against each other, each with a unique set of features designed to alter the gameplay paradigm of a particular race.

When it comes to RTS my approach is somewhat religious. That is to say, I am possessed of a fanatical devotion to one particular entity (in this case, StarCraft) and denounce all others. Grey Goo was immediately familiar in a superficial sense, but quickly distinguished itself with a number of unique spins on the format–and, interestingly, a focus on macro gameplay.

Impressions – Brawlhalla

Brawlhalla Preview
I’m coming off of a two month long Smash Bros. bender, which is even longer if you count the time I spent feeding off of the slow-drip hamster bottle that is Sakurai’s Miiverse page. This is a great time to be a fan of 2D platform fighter games… that is, if you own any Nintendo hardware.

A game looking to amend that caveat is Brawlhalla, a fighting game similar to Smash Bros., but in lieu of Nintendo’s all-star cast of characters, it lines its roster with the greatest warrior archetypes in history, both real and fictional.

Impressions – Dungeon Defenders II

Dungeon Defenders II Preview
Dungeon Defenders II, a tower defense RPG from Trendy Entertainment, opens up for Early Access on Steam today. Early Access is paid, but at launch the game will be free-to-play — however those who invest in Early Access will receive in game currency and premium items to offset the cost (as those features are implemented).

Sequel to Trendy’s 2010 original, DD2 mixes tower defense with action-RPG elements, comfortably merging melee combat with base-building. Games alternate between build phases and combat phases, where up to four heroes prepare for and battle escalating waves of enemy creatures.

Hands On with NeverDead

NeverDead Hands On
Konami has no shortage of brands to call on when it comes to keeping the pixels moving and the store shelves stocked. The majority of their mainline brands read like the “who’s who” list from my childhood, and yet still find opportunities to remain relevant with new iterations in the here and now. With that in mind, NeverDead initially caught my attention as a curious ambition – a fresh IP digging for new tricks to create an original title that didn’t immediately leave me imagining an endless trail of sequels to follow.

The chance to step into Bryce’s immortal shoes recently lent a few more insights into how that ambition and collaboration with Rebellion is playing out, so let’s finally chew on matters of life, death, and Bryce’s unfortunate position between those two points.

The Last Word on X’11

X 11
As you may have noticed from the slew of hands-on posts, Sugar went to X’11 and played a bunch of delicious games—and we’re not done talking about them quite yet.

In addition to Binary Domain, Rise of Nightmares, and Dead Island, I had the opportunity to get my hands on a whole mess of other games—titles like Space Marine, and some other little indie games you might not have heard of, like Mass Effect 3 and Rage. If these are the sorts of things that interest you, you may click onward to unfurl my parchment of mighty gaming tales.

The View From X’11

X11 Toronto
Microsoft’s annual Toronto holiday showcase of all things 360 took place yesterday, and I was fortunate enough to make the event with other members of Team Sugar to check in on upcoming releases for the system.

This year’s showing was undoubtedly the largest one in recent memory, with a slew of publishers showing so many titles that the mind boggled at how to break down and digest so much content. It’s not often companies like Square-Enix, Bethesda, 2K Games, and Sega come to town, and the result was a never-ending sea of screens that left me feeling a bit dizzy by the end of the day.

With that said, I’m going to stay true to form and simply tell you what caught my eye.

Your Prinny 2 Overdose

Prinny 2
NIS America aims to sweeten your weekend by ending off the week with a barrel full of videos for Prinny 2: Dawn of Operation Panties, Dood! Yes, I still feel awkward writing that title, but don’t let that stop you from overdosing on footage from the game, which should start 2011 off on the right note when it releases January 11th.

Catch it after the break dood!
