Images Worth A Few Words – Aya Brea Edition

The Third Birthday
I’ve tuned out on The 3rd Birthday over the last few months, mostly in order to skip Square-Enix’s strange new desire to twitter every last detail away during the lead up to the Japanese release of Aya’s PSP debut.

It’s hard to ignore this image of Aya in her now bloodstained wedding dress however, gracing the cover of Dengeki PlayStation, so I suppose Squeenix still knows how to grab my attention when push comes to shove.

Gertie the Dinosaur
While playing and writing on Disney Epic Mickey didn’t yield the most positive of reviews, it has stirred an obsession to revisit some aged animations, the most prehistoric of which being Winsor McCay’s 1914 Gertie the Dinosaur – not the first cartoon ever created, but considered the first featuring a character narrative.

Obviously I can’t place myself among the first audiences to marvel at the sight of imaginary creations given life, but even today the exaggerated movements of Gertie offer a spectacle that finds me stuck on poking comparisons to the first videogames I came into contact with, suddenly offered the chance not only to witness creations given life, but also able to control that movement through a new medium seeking to deepen the connection.

Of course at the time I didn’t realize this would become such an obsession, but here we are. The appreciation I have for Gertie’s every movement reminds me most of the way I felt during the 16-bit console generation, with so many developers exploiting any chance to give their creations more life and my young eyes marveling at the simplest touches.

NeoGeo Station for PlayStation Network

NeoGeo
SNK Playmore is all nostalgic about the 20th anniversary of the NeoGeo, and the PlayStation Network has been designated the celebration spot as of December 21, 2010, when NeoGeo Station starts extending the NeoGeo library to the PlayStation Network, with titles releasing for the PS3 at $8.99 and the PSP at $6.99.

Players can expect classic NeoGeo with a touch of the modern in the way of network play over PSN and Ad-Hoc compatibility for PSP.

Ten games will be available for PS3 when Station launches on December 21, with only Fatal Fury and Metal Slug available for PSP that day, though SNK Playmore plans to offer PSP versions of the entire launch list along with more releases during 2011.

The full list for the 21st includes Fatal Fury, Alpha Mission II, The King of Fighters ’94, Samurai Shodown, Baseball Stars Professional, Magician Lord, Metal Slug, League Bowling, Super Sidekicks, and Art of Fighting.

Gamesugar’s Sonic Colors Coloring Contest!

Sonic Colors Coloring Contest
One of my most pleasant surprises in the last week has been the discovery that overall, I enjoy playing Sonic’s latest outing on the Wii, which I’ll likely give more words to shortly.

In the meantime however, we seem to be in possession of an extra copy of Sonic Colors for both the Wii and the DS courtesy of Sega, and the Holiday spirit compels us to offer them to you, assuming you’re up for an artistic challenge that is. Our favorite guest artist, Kyatt, has created a hedgehog masterpiece very much in need of a splash of color, so we need you to color Sonic in, the full image can be gotten right here.

We’ll leave it to you to decide whether you want to use computer paint, or color Sonic the old fashioned way if you have a scanner at your disposal.

The important part is that you write either Wii or DS on your entry to let us know which copy you’re after, and that you email your entry to sonic@gamesugar.net by 11:59 pm est on Sunday December 12, 2010.

Well draw and announce two winners the following week.

Good luck!

PSA – Fluidity Hits WiiWare

Fluidity
Curve Studio’s form shifting title releases today for 1,200 points, and anyone curious about the game have no excuse to be left behind since Nintendo has also offered up a demo for the release.

Somewhere between playing as a pool of water that can transform into steam and ice, and tilting the WiiMote to affect events on screen, this feels like a splash of what Sony often hoards with titles like Loco Roco and PixelJunk Shooter – so fingers crossed as usual.

Catch some short video of the game in action after the break.

The Best Game of Never – The Devil’s Robot

In our continuing mission to explore strange new worlds, seek out new life and—er, no, that’s something else. In our continuing mission to bring you the latest best most amusing video game nonsense, we here at Gamesugar offer you our latest discovery: the best game you never played.

We first discovered the existence of The Devil’s Robot (Check out the cartridge!) in an advertisement in the back of an obscure comic book published in August of 1993. As internet demagogues of some repute, we sent out word that we were seeking a copy of this mysterious artifact, and it was not long before one of our loyal subjects responded. Apparently only distributed for six days in 1993, The Devil’s Robot is an RPG/Action/Platforming/Racer that sees the protagonist, SCIENCEMAN, navigating a post-apocalyptic wasteland, evading the attacks of the Devil’s Robot. The object of the game is to acquire the knowledge and artifacts to finally build SCIENCEMAN’s own terrifying robot construct to destroy the devil.

Hey Kids, It’s Gamesugar’s First Birthday!

Gamesugars First Birthday!
Hey Sugarfiends, can you believe it’s been a year since we set off on this expedition into the gaming wasteland together?

Yes, one year ago today, with little more than a copy of Clash of Heroes and the strange compulsion to keep spewing words about these videogames, Gamesugar was born, and hastily cobbled together, mostly out of construction paper, macaroni and glitter.

While producing a year’s worth of content owes something to my being a stubborn ox, it owes much more to those people that jumped aboard to help, either by directly contributing to articles, tackling background work, offering moral support during my many mental breakdowns, attending events near and far, and genuinely being awesome.

To all of those people: Thank-you, I’ll save you the biggest piece of cake today.
