Trailer Park – Hyperdimension Neptunia

Hyperdimension Neptunia
There are few things I enjoy more than girly JRPGs filled to the brim with bubbly techno music and anime inspired character designs. Sakura Wars: So Long My Love most recently filled that cotton candy-shaped hole in my heart, but now Hyperdimension Neptunia is finally on the way and we have NIS America, the patron saint of Japanese quirk to thank for bringing it to the West.

If this newly released trailer is any indication, Neptunia should satisfy all of my aforementioned prerequisites for a delightful time sink. On top of that, there’s a battle system that utilizes game consoles personified as goddesses, the ability to summon pictures and even game characters from your PS3’s HDD, and in-game use of your own images all on an epic journey through a world called Gamindustri (“Game Industry”, in case the subtlety isn’t smashing you in the face hard enough).

The game is slated for release in February 2011.

Nanosuits, etc.

Crysis 2
Important warning: if you’re concerned about the welfare of your face, stop now and go do something else. If you feel you may need your face for later, leave your computer and do not return. Gamesugar accepts no responsibility for the possibility that your face may be blown off by the force of the following trailer for Crysis 2.

If there was any doubt that an urban sprawl would offer infinitely more intriguing options for the wielder of the nanosuit than the original jungle, it’s been washed away in a flood of images depicting the player kicking cars, hurling aliens off ledges and bounding across rooftops at super speed. Crysis 2 appears to be shaping up into a defining FPS experience, and if you dare risk the safety of your own face, you can check out the most recent trailer after the break.

More Life Extension for Demon’s Souls

Demons Souls
Atlus had previously pledged to keep the lights on for Demon’s Souls’ servers until at least March 2011, and now sends word that they are aiming to keep the online side of the RPG that refuses to die running until the game’s second anniversary – which would put us around October 2011 if you’re keeping score. I do realize many would like the online part of the game to continue forever.

The announcement comes with a reminder that the game is available at greatest hits pricing, and that those in Boletaria can expect a Pure White World Tendency event starting on December 20th and running into the start of the new year.

Review – Dead Nation

Dead Nation
Last week Sony delivered unto us Dead Nation, the latest entry in the increasingly swamped “Kill a crapload of zombies” market. When we talk about the popularity of zombie games (and movies, TV shows, and probably Halloween prosthetics), there’s a joke in there somewhere about a spreading infection, but I’ll save you a groan and not make it.

Dead Nation takes the form of a top-down shoot-‘em-up, as appears to be the pattern for a number of recent small digital releases. You’ll choose a male or female character to fight through the zombie ravaged city in an effort to retrieve the apparently important body of Patient Zero and hopefully formulate a cure. There’s a story to be had here, though the product may have been better off without it. Rarely would I champion the cause for less narrative, but this story is a strange half-measure that seems to exist only to showcase some (admittedly sharp) artwork. Told through brief interludes between missions, it describes the journey of your character through the zombie wasteland in such thin detail that it may as well not bother at all. Your character has lines, but they exist only to tell you what your objective is, not because you’re actually a person with thoughts—and since the objective is always the same (get from point A to point B), this is entirely superfluous.

Dead Space 2 Demo Coming

Dead Space 2 Demo
EA sent word that we’ll be able to get a taste of Isaac Clarke’s trip through The Sprawl before the release on January 25, 2011, with a demo of Dead Space 2 hitting Xbox Live worldwide and the PlayStation Network in North America on December 21, 2010 – European PS3 owners have to wait one more day for a December 22nd release.

Additional word is that said demo offers a walk through the Church of Unitology, so maybe remember to say your prayers before playing, anything with religion involved is apt to be frightening.

Binary Domain

Binary Domain
Sega’s robot science-fiction action title from the maker of Yakuza is an odd kettle of fish, at least based on the first trailer floating around the net today, which oddly plays heavy on the North American squad-based shooter only to slide into a bit of the potentially bizarre twist that insinuates a deeper objective at the very end. Most of the video is plenty parts “send in the killbots,” caught somewhere between The Terminator and I, Robot, begging to be viewed as a predictable attempt to please the North American marketplace at the moment.

Toshihiro Nagoshi’s included pitch in the PR offers a few potential reads,

“What I wanted to create this time was a dramatic and energetic sci-fi shooter. When you hear sci-fi you may think of cold, clinical environments but with Binary Domain I wanted to combine this with a deep human drama,” commented Toshihiro Nagoshi. “The keyword we have in mind for this project is ’Life’. I wanted to make something that will be accepted by both the Japanese and Western markets, and this fundamental theme is something everyone knows but which the full extent of can be difficult to grasp.”

Sega mentions this idea of life having an important role with the battlefield AI, but does this also mean we should anticipate environments pulsing with life, or expect a plot ever heavy with philosophical drippings layering over a generic “me too” shooter? Your guess is as good as mine, all I know at the moment is that I wouldn’t have minded them “Ghost in the Shelling” it up a bit.

There really isn’t a lot to go on here without actual gameplay, so we’ll have to wait and see. In the meantime you can catch the current trailer after the break.
