Peace Walker – The View from Mother Base

Metal Gear Solid - Peace Walker
Even while being bombarded by E3, I was chewing through Peace Walker reasonably quick until hitting the first of the game’s singing robotic superweapons. The massive tank with the unfortunately odd name of Pupa was waiting to attack in the first confrontation within the game that didn’t provide any safe havens for planning strategy or recovery.

Two previous encounters with heavier infantry offered buildings or overturned wreckage for refuge, but this encounter occurs within a large open arena, a bit like a match of Twisted Metal – except that Boss doesn’t have access to a machinegun equipped ice cream truck.

Refresh Rate – TMNT IV: Turtles in Time

TMNT IV: Turtles in Time
There was a time when the turtles were bigger than pro wrestling. As it’s been a number of years since the pinnacle of their success, it’s probably best to specify that I’m referring, of course, to the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. Undoubtedly, there is a certain generation of people who don’t need that specification; when they hear ‘the turtles’, their minds make that immediate synaptic connection to the Ninja Turtles. But, as time passes, there is bound to be ever more gamers and movie fans who weren’t there to experience Turtle Power first hand.

Consider this your time machine.

E3 Impressions – A Tale of Two Downloadable Titles

Downloadable Titles
Two of the top downloadable games I saw at E3 2010 are definitely Konami’s Hard Corps: Uprising and Square-Enix’s Space Invaders Infinity Gene. Child of Eden was stealing plenty of the limelight and my attention, but these games deserve some recognition.

Konami is releasing Hard Corps: Uprising on Xbox LIVE Arcade and PlayStation Network this fall, and judging by the E3 demo, it’s coming along really well. The art shift makes it easy to call it a refreshing take on a celebrated franchise, whose concept and gameplay controls are still adopted from early Contra games – of course new features such as online co-op mode and leaderboards tag along for the nostalgia trip.

I couldn’t help but notice “working title” on the E3 sign with Hard Corps. Does that mean that they’re considering putting “Contra” back in the title? I’m going to guess probably not.

Konami’s E3 Horror Show

Konami's E3 Horror Show
Konami went to a great amount of trouble to demonstrate the concept of Zan Datsu earlier today, slicing through the second full day of E3 2010 to take time away from busy people – the jury quickly concluding said time could have been better invested elsewhere.

During an awkward stretch of time where industry professionals seemed to be watching the clock while talking, Konami did cough up a trailer for the next installment of the Silent Hill series, under the uninspiring working title of Silent Hill 8.

Silent Hill is a franchise near and dear to me, from the timeless accomplishment of Silent Hill 2’s psychological twister, straight through to Silent Hill Shattered Memories – a game I still insist is worth the investment. And yet my bias toward the series can’t survive a very simple trailer, full of atmospheric smog and flashlight frights that can be had from numerous other titles already available. It isn’t over yet, but I was expecting something more than simply tossing another stray soul into the Silent Hill snake pit while obligatory horrors ensue.

It’s a post Alan Wake world, not because that title was everything expected, but because it reminded us of just how well conceived and edited a suspenseful horror title could be.

Hell it’s even a post Shattered Memories world.

It was the trailer for Rebellion’s NeverDead that grabbed for more of my attention, not because there’s very much footage to go on, but rather that it was cut in that way that really doesn’t tell me anything, so I simply have to know more. Additionally I could use another third-person action title with a sense of humor.

Catch video for both games after the break.

SHMUP Confirmation – Otomedius Excellent

Otomedius Excellent
Even if some retailer revelations spoiled the size of the surprise, I’m still ten shades of strange-shooter-happy to get an email confirming that Konami is bringing Otomedius Excellent to the 360 this year. The sequel to Otomedius Gorgeous offers nine “stunning” characters over Konami’s brand of 2D sidescrolling – and three players can apparently team up locally or over XBLA.

Konami even mentions “exciting downloadable content to be announced later”. Not only is Konami bringing it here, but they even sound excited about it –

“As the sequel to the 2008 Japanese hit Otomedius Gorgeous, Otomedius Excellent boasts a significant visual and gameplay update since its predecessor. Accompanied by brilliant graphics and an excellent soundtrack, Otomedius Excellent will engage fans with the Gradius franchise on a whole new level.” – Shinji Hirano, President of Konami Digital Entertainment, Inc.

Kojima’s Metal Gear Solid-palooza

Metal Gear Solid 3DS
Turns out that Metal Gear Solid 3D Snaker Eater – The Naked Sample for Nintendo 3DS is Hideo Kojima’s third mystery E3 title – which severely surprised the hell out of me for what it’s worth. Oh ZOE, shall I never know your future exploits?

Kojima Productions has added a teaser site for the game with some screenshots that seem to leave many of my fellow editors cursing the amount of devices Metal Gear Solid fans are driven to purchase.

As one of those fans, who is still happily chewing through Peace Walker this week, Metal Gear is one of the very few things you can never have too much of, especially when following Big Boss’ story – though even I wonder if Kojima wants a break yet.

Kojima Productions – Two Down, One to Go?

Kojima Productions
Kojima Productions’ E3 site got an update since I last took a look at it, leaving a pretty wide space for everyone to start shouting out their favorite possibilities for what a third mystery E3 reveal title might be.

I’m going to shout-out Zone of the Enders 3 from now until we find out, but don’t let that spoil your fun if you’re after something else. Also expect to find out the answer sometime between the Sony Press Conference today and Konami’s own Press Conference tomorrow.
