Review – Hard Corps: Uprising

hard corps uprising contra review
The jury may be out on whether an alias allows a rose to ditch its sickly scent, but I can confirm that Konami’s anime-styled breakaway from the Contra brand doesn’t sacrifice the bullet-points that have come to define the franchise. This uprising begins with heavy guitars and vibrant explosions to paint a scene of idealistic resistance against the forces of old and evil, with characters cut from a familiar cloth of eighties anime memories and mournful war-zones – but Contra’s principles of play are ever present, remixed once again to provide a war opera worthy of the twitching that stirs in fingers left unsatisfied by many modern releases.

The lush palette softens the traditionally gritty edges of Contra’s battlefield, but a merciless spirit wears the pop-shifted aesthetic, and veterans can rest assured that Hard Corps: Uprising is fucking metal.

Hard Corps Uprising
Late night CES emails from Microsoft catch my eye when they appear to out Konami dates, and so here we are. In an announcement regarding a lineup of titles for an Xbox Live Arcade House Party, Microsoft has ARC System Works’ Hard Corps: Uprising set for release on February 16th.

Additional titles for the five week house party include Beyond Good and Evil HD, Bejeweled Blitz Live, and Torchlight.

Your Latest Dose of Hard Corps: Uprising

Hard Corps Uprising
I’m not really a screenshot kinda guy, and the latest batch for Uprising offers very few – however every shot that emerges this year testifies to Arc System Works’ mastery of visual pop, and that once again seems worth a nod.

I continue hoping we won’t have to wait too much longer to be seduced by the actual release, but in the meantime you can catch some freshly frozen glimpses after the break.

Hard Corps: Uprising
Not to be left out of the Comic Con fun, Konami has released assets for several games, only one of which is Hard Corps: Uprising, mighty focus of my attention.

Think lush, think vivid, think of how awesome it is when it rains in 2D. I know it’s premature, but I love you Arc System Works.

Catch a fresh batch of screens after the break.

E3 Impressions – A Tale of Two Downloadable Titles

Downloadable Titles
Two of the top downloadable games I saw at E3 2010 are definitely Konami’s Hard Corps: Uprising and Square-Enix’s Space Invaders Infinity Gene. Child of Eden was stealing plenty of the limelight and my attention, but these games deserve some recognition.

Konami is releasing Hard Corps: Uprising on Xbox LIVE Arcade and PlayStation Network this fall, and judging by the E3 demo, it’s coming along really well. The art shift makes it easy to call it a refreshing take on a celebrated franchise, whose concept and gameplay controls are still adopted from early Contra games – of course new features such as online co-op mode and leaderboards tag along for the nostalgia trip.

I couldn’t help but notice “working title” on the E3 sign with Hard Corps. Does that mean that they’re considering putting “Contra” back in the title? I’m going to guess probably not.

Hard Corps: Uprising – Contents May Vary

Hard Corps: Uprising
After watching some rough footage for Konami and Arc System Works’ Hard Corps: Uprising, I don’t know if every Contra fan is going to readily get on board – if you’ve met any you know they always bring high expectations and a well warranted hesitation to new entries in the franchise.

Even with the poor quality of the video, the game looks to offer plenty of what I’m after however – speed, gorgeous backgrounds, and character designs and animations that pop with a pulse. Show me some bosses this week and I’m ready to enlist for this anime nostalgia trip.

You can catch footage of a single and co-op run after the break. Let me know if you agree, or if you think I need to take my meds before the show starts.
