Swords & Soldiers Marching To PSN

Swords & Soldiers
As you may have heard earlier today, Sony Online Entertainment gave word that Ronimo Games’ WiiWare RTS plans to invade the PlayStation Network later this Fall. As part of the move, the game’s unique brand of animated mayhem and civilization conquering strife is getting a bump in the visual department as well as the online features.

Always looking to learn more about HD-ness, I managed to catch up with Ronimo’s Fabian Akker to find out a bit more about the work involved –

“The cool thing is that we had little work on the HD graphics, most of the assets were made in HD and then scaled down for Wii, so it was mostly just exporting the original high res files for PSN.

The visuals in the HD PSN version are really sharp and crisp, it helps the characters a lot. For instance you can now clearly see the skull belt on the viking berserker which was just a yellow blob on the Wii, so especially for our artists it’s great to see all these cool details as they were meant to be seen.”

PixelJunk Shooter 2, and Other Sony Bits

Pixeljunk Shooter 2
Feel like getting eaten? That’s where PixelJunk Shooter 2 plans to pick up, directly following the original. The game’s also bringing online multiplayer and ghosting options along with online ranking when it hits the PlayStation Network later this year.

Other Sony bits grabbing attention from yesterday are on the PSP front, with Patapon 3 aiming for a release this fall – complete with a rather stark teaser promising a demo on June 23.

And least I forget, Valkyria Chronicles 2 has a date with my PSP on August 31.

The Brave New World of PlayStation Plus

Announced during Sony’s presentation at E3 today was the incoming Playstation Plus subscription service. With the continued success of Xbox Live, plans from Activision to implement a subscription model within the Call of Duty franchise, and this latest announcement from Sony, the subscription model is quickly becoming ubiquitous within the game industry. Sony’s announcement was no surprise, having been the stuff of rumour for months, and a total inevitability, considering certain realities. If you imagine a great, serpentine creature twisting, wringing it’s hands and salivating uncontrollably, you probably have a fair understanding of how Sony has observed Microsoft’s Xbox Live Gold service for the past several years, and know that this day always existed somewhere in the imminent future.

Blade Kitten’s Edge

Blade Kitten
Blade Kitten also got a tiny update over at the PlayStation Blog today – yes it’s a busy place today. Krome Studios Producer Heidi Stapleton has written about tackling both Krome’s first side-scrolling game as well as their first downloadable title.

As far as level design goes, she mentions obligatory sewer tunnels, grassy plains, an urban marketplace and temple – but hey she mentions Strider as an influence so fingers crossed.

What I’m most interested in with the title is the floating blades, which are independent of the player so that, as she says –

“One of the ways Blade Kitten differs from most other side-scrollers is that the player can engage in combat whilst climbing on walls and hanging from ceilings.”

Blade Kitten will have several blades players can purchase within the game, with different attributes for dealing with various enemies.

Word of a release date is said to be coming soon. Once again, fingers crossed – I need more side-scrolling fix this year. Well, every year.

Trailer Park – Dead Nation

Zombies – The only humanoids you can slaughter in videogames that cause less weight on your conscience than Nazis.

Continuing the zombie craze that has infected both cinema and games in recent years, Dead Nation is an upcoming PSN exclusive that looks a lot like the reportedly underwhelming Zombie Apocalypse from Konami. However, with a cheesy trailer, tons of zombie gibs, and the promise of co-op, the game already has the trappings that keep dragging us back for more. Dead Nation will also keep track of national statistics if you’re into that sort of thing.

You can check out the trailer after the cut while I go flog myself for not resisting that zombie pun in the paragraph above.

Review – The Challenges of the Edy Detachment

Valkyria Chronicles
The legend of Valkyria Chronicles’ sometimes crushing difficulty is a subject I’m well familiar with, but I was still surprised to take on the Shocktrooper challenge and find myself facing what seemed like the entire Imperial Army, gunning down poor Rosie before I knew what was happening.

When I first heard that this latest DLC would offer challenges from each soldier class within the game, I suppose I imagined it as a potential sampler for players who still haven’t caved to the peer pressure of the Valkyria faithful. For some reason this made me think that the game might go a bit easier on players, but rest assured that these six missions are every bit grueling enough to merit the word challenge.

Review – Fret Nice

Fret Nice
Fret Nice’s invitation to play through familiar territory with a slightly skewed set of controls is as alluring as it is frustrating at first. Short on fancier words, I’ll suggest that there are plenty of moments in this writing about games experiment where I spend days puzzling over what to make of a title, and this is no exception.

The nagging sensation biting at my neck makes it hard to simply brush the game aside as a mediocre platformer with a hook. Even without the guitar, Fret Nice would be an interesting diversion from the everyday, though a little light on content. And so here we are, with me kinda liking the game, but entirely unsure of what to do with it – of course I realize the obvious answer is to be playing it.
