Earth Defense Force
It’s official, with D3 confirming that Earth Defense Force: Insect Armageddon is a real thing, with release windows and everything – under development by Vicious Cycle and set to hit NA 360’s and PS3’s this Spring.

As for whether this can be considered a sequel or just another dose, D3 added that Insect Armageddon is a new game taking on the concept of Earth Defense Force 2017.

Insect Armageddon brings a campaign mode that lets up to three players team up for the fight online, deploying soldiers armed with over 150 weapons and four upgradable armor sets to the streets of a completely destroyable New Detroit – and word of a six-player survival mode.

Monkey Paw’s Importing The Bullets

Monkey Paw
Monkey Paw Games sent around word today about the PlayStation Network’s new Import Store, which opens for business on September 21. The new publisher is bringing two shooter titles to market that day, Cho Aniki and GaiaSeed – both in their original Japanese PS1 not-localized forms, and for $5.99 a piece.

In a decision they may or may not regret, Monkey Paw is also encouraging gamers to drop by their site to let them know about what other Japanese-only titles of the past should hop aboard this new import train.

I will say right away the the write-ups on Monkey Paw’s site, which currently includes Cho Aniki, GaiaSeed, and Ante Up: Texas Hold’em Poker (…?) are damn entertaining –

One of the greatest shooters that never made it to Western markets, GaiaSeed is a smooth and silky display of algorhythmic perfection that always challenges but never frustrates.

PSA – Sin & Punishment: Star Successor Competition

Sin & Punishment Star Successor
Readers in the United States might be interested to hear that Nintendo of America has partnered with Twin Galaxies International – those guys who keep lots of videogame records – to bring a scoring competition for one of my favorite releases of the year.

Although I’m on the wrong side of the border, some of you could do me proud by taking up the challenge of getting the highest score possible on the third level of Star Successor – using the WiiMote and Nunchuk. The competition starts today and ends on October 6, and apparently requires a video of you playing the game.

Hit Twin Galaxies up for more information on the rules and the Wii swag prize info – and remember that if you win I might salute and sing your praises for a very long time*

Review – Ivy the Kiwi?

Ivy the Kiwi?
Last year’s mobile game from Prope has returned for a Wii/DS combo release, though interviews have revealed that the Wii version preceded all other concerns – and it definitely shows.

Prope Studio founder Yuji Naka’s life after Sega is easy to typecast as one focused on the control side of gaming – the way we interact with the medium, not simply via the use of new peripherals but in exploring the way tactile actions and video output work together to create new experiences. Last year that focus had me tapping on a cereal box to vibrate a WiiMote with the release of Let’s Tap, but where that release came across more as an interesting technical demonstration, Ivy the Kiwi? is less on the esoteric and more about playtime with straight-forward appeal.

More over, Ivy feels like a return to form, a game of crafted levels designed for an instantly iconic character that is unavoidably as cute as a box of puppies, and finds a welcome place alongside other Naka creations such as Sonic the Hedgehog or Nights into Dreams

Kirby's Epic Yarn
I think I’ve been told yarn has a million uses at least once. Nintendo is lending some weight to that possibility by showing off more than a few with your latest Kirby art-break.

Is Kirby doing a hadouken?

Trailer Park – Valkyria Chronicles 3

Valkyria Chronicles 3
Sega’s offered up a trailer for the PSP fan instigator, which consists entirely of cut-scenes sans any sign of gameplay – animated war is still hell.

I’d really like to know how many of you are disappointed that this wasn’t a PS3 release, and how many are content to simply get another dose of the series, so catch the video and give me an ear full after the break.

Waiting For Ueda

The Last Guardian
Sony helped clear up why The Last Guardian wasn’t at other events this year with a TGS showing that dates the game for the 2011 Holiday Season. I’m sure plenty of you join me in observing that this is one very long wait for a game that on faith alone justified the long term ownership of a PS3.

The consolation prize is confirmation of the Ico and Shadow of the Colossus Collection, which is said to run at 30 fps in HD and 3D – but is also a Spring 2011 wait.

You can catch trailers for both after the break.
