Check Your Enthusiasm – Crackdown 2

Crackdown 2
It would be easy to suggest that Pacific City is one of the harder urban spaces on the videogame map for citizens to inhabit, but more accurate to paint it as a battle zone on the losing side of regaining any measure of sanity – aptly demonstrated by an obligatory introduction cinematic that invites the eyes to feast on an ultra-violent spectacle.

Ruffian’s Crackdown 2 plagues Pacific City with the tightly organized violence of the terrorist group Cell fighting against the authoritarian fist of The Agency players work for, flavored further by a setting sun that brings hordes of mutant zombie “Freaks” to the streets to infect the remaining citizens.

Continuing with the straightforward agenda of desperate times calling for desperate measures, it takes a new breed of genetically engineered enforcer to retake such streets, and players fill the heavy boots of The Agency’s human RoboCop – with the added agility needed to patrol Pacific City by street and roof top equally.

With all the turmoil immediately awaiting players in this sandbox, the most surprising aspect is how little is offered to merit the sequel. Crackdown 2 creates a vortex where time becomes meaningless not because it has no value, but rather because of just how much time is wasted in the mix of tedium and monotony that provides damning evidence that this revisit is, at best, a first draft toward a game worth a second of the player’s attention.

Microsoft’s Summer of Arcade 2010

Summer of Arcade
Microsoft is once again grouping together some key XBLA titles this summer under their “summer of arcade” theme. This year’s titles include Lara Croft’s new venue in The Guardian of Light, reborn water racer Hydro Thunder Hurricane, Castlevania: Harmony of Despair, Indie title Limbo, and the death sport reality show themed Monday Night Combat.

Of those titles mentioned, I know Lara Croft will set you back 1200 MS Points so far – we’ll get more info on the others to you as it comes in.

In the meantime I can offer you a montage trailer after the break, if you’re interested.

Check Your Enthusiam – When Star Wars Meets Kinect

Kinect Star Wars
I guess anytime you want to create excitement for a piece of gaming hardware, you could still drag the Star Wars license into it. Okay maybe I don’t entirely believe that, but it did help get me to buy a Gamecube back in the day.

As for the bit of Star Wars Microsoft had to show at their Press Conference today, ideally to demonstrate a harder core of game for Kinect…

Keep in mind people always tell me that this or that might be early in development, and certainly that’s true. But it’s also true that you bring the best you have to an event such as this, and this video has bizarrely taken me back to the days of Rebel Assault, and offers up a short battle that looks as if storm troopers are playing laser ping pong.

Take it with a grain of salt I suppose, either way I think it’s kinda hilarious to watch, after the break.

The 360 Slim, Now Shipping

Xbox 360 Slim
They waited until the last minutes of the Press Conference to announce it – in fact I was seriously wondering what was going on, but the Xbox 360 Slim made its appearance after months of rumor and speculation. On the list of things I wasn’t expecting, certainly built-in Wireless of the N variety, and that it would be shipping to stores today. The 250 GB hard drive wasn’t nearly as much of a surprise, and it remains to be seen if it’s whisper quiet like they say – also it’s $299 in case you were wondering.

The only thing more surprising was the Oprah moment where everyone in the audience found out that they’d be receiving a slim courtesy of Microsoft. Well, either that or not getting any price point on Kinect… :/

UPDATE – Word is our friends in Europe can expect the slim on July 16
UPDATE 2 – Internal Removable 250 GB Hard Drive

Microsoft Had Me At Hideo

Metal Gear Solid : Rising
Microsoft might have opened with an obligatory look at Call of Duty Black Ops, complete with an early exclusivity on DLC arrangement that explains where Activision got more cash to throw E3 parties with this year, but the show didn’t really start until Kojima came on stage – even if he did quickly pass the torch.

The trailer for Metal Gear Solid Rising may not have shown a tonne, but it was more than I expected and had it where it counts – namely in showing me a game that finally lets me slice a sword through everything from vehicles to bricks. And this is an aside to the game’s driving philosophy of Zan Datsu, or “Cut” and “Take” which brings a vampire edge to the title with Raiden slicing characters in two and claiming energy from their glowing innards.

If you haven’t seen it yet, or want to see it again and again, you can join my MGS fan party after the break.

Can Microsoft Kinect With Gamers?

Connect with Kinect
As we all know, Microsoft held a large scale press extravaganza last night to showcase their new “Kinect” peripheral. What we’ve known as Project Natal hasn’t changed much with this new name, but there are some key factors in all of this that still need to be announced before I can see myself proudly displaying it under my TV.

I’ve been up all night attempting to write this article, until one specific line hit me while talking with Jamie about it: The price of novelty. The price of novelty is a simple rule about how much you are willing to spend on a device, for the length of time you think having it will be interesting. My hesitation in writing anything quite yet is the lack of a price point. Sure there have been rumors floating around, but nothing set in stone, and no prices that yet sound very appealing to me. What I’m left with is wondering how long will I, as a gamer, be able to enjoy the novelty of the Kinect?

Questionable Intelligence – Meet Kinect

Kinect
What a day yesterday, with Project Natal getting rebranded as Kinect – see it’s like it connects you even more to your 360, but also hits on Kinetics! Get it?!

Okay, so maybe I haven’t been blown away by the games so far, which may or may not work very well, but as one Editor reminded me this morning there’s still the Minority Report styled menu controls.

As much fun as I might have poking fun at this device before Microsoft’s Press Conference reiterates why everyone should run out and buy it this fall, I feel obligated to warn you about some very disturbing video I saw this morning – detailing what became of one unfortunate family with the device in question.

Video evidence after the break.
