Q&A – Aksys Talks 999

999
While far from perfect, the infinitely looping adventure of a prinny through the Disgaea universe this year planted the idea in my head that I might enjoy what the visual novel genre has to offer. Mind you, it’s still a mostly foreign concept to me, and prior to NISA’s stab at the genre I would have to fall back on PSP Metal Gear Solid comics as a poor substitution toward an idea of what a graphical text adventure is all about – which doesn’t really help at all.

A far better taste of the genre is coming later this year courtesy of Aksys Games though, with the localization of Chunsoft’s DS title 999 (9 Hours, 9 People, 9 Doors) – in which nine characters work to escape a cruise ship they are trapped aboard, not unlike a horror film, but of course with a tad more reading involved.

Lucky for me and my curiosity that Aksys had time to talk a bit about the title, which you can catch for yourself after the break.

Scott Pilgrim x Attract Mode x Giant Robot = AWESOMENESS

Giant Robot
Scott Pilgrim vs. the World: The Game is out on PSN today and I’m anxiously twiddling my thumbs waiting for the PSN Store to refresh with today’s new releases. In the mean time, I found out about an event that will make people who don’t live in Los Angeles very jealous.

Attract Mode and Giant Robot are hosting a Game Night event with Bryan Lee O’Malley, who will be present for a signing and game session with fans at GR2 on August 21. At 5:00pm, he’ll be signing copies of Scott Pilgrim Volume 6 and after that wraps up, he’ll be playing Scott Pilgrim vs. the World: The Game multiplayer mode with fans.

Gamesugar had a great time at the first Game Night with Gaijin Games, so count on us attending this one and sharing the photos shortly after.

Tales from Earthsea

Tales from Earthsea
While it won’t likely threaten to steal any of Scott Pilgrim’s thunder, Studio Ghibli’s Tales from Earthsea is finally hitting theaters next week – directed by Goro Miyazaki, or Miyazaki Jr. rather than Sr. if you prefer.

I say finally because the film released to Japan in 2006, and pretty well every other continent on Earth since. Whether the wait for Disney to bring it here has anything to do with it having some of the most negative reviews I’ve ever seen for a Ghibli film remains to be seen next Friday – I like my first viewing of a Ghibli film to be in the theater.

In the meantime, catch Disney’s half attempt at a trailer after the break.

Who’s That Flying?!

WTF?!
UK studio Mediatonic, also known as the first studio to produce a PlayStation Mini title I had any interest in (Monsters (Probably) Stole My Princess!) have dispatched word about what might become the second PlayStation Mini title I care about, Who’s That Flying?! – or WTF?!, see what they did there?

I should be more interested in Mini releases given my deteriorating attention span for longer games. The subtle art of grabbing my attention in this case owes plenty to the pitch,

“It’s a side-scrolling shooter meets tower defense (with courtroom drama and intrigue!) doused in sheer awesomeness… AND THEN SET ON FIRE.”

Some of what that actually means remains a mystery, but the mix of side-scrolling and tower defense requires preventing a set amount of enemies from getting into the city, thus saving it from invasion.

Mediatonic says the game is finished and going through the age-rating process, with a release for early September on the radar.

Your Recommended Dose of Solatorobo

Solatorobo
Whilst getting into gear here in Sugarland, I couldn’t help noticing that there’s a healthy dose of concept art from CyberConnect 2’s upcoming DS title Solatorobo floating around this morning – which of course necessitates this PSA.

Aside from the fact that I like to mention every update about this Japanese release, you should definitely investigate for yourself if you dig fresh designs, or if you just have an unhealthy interest in humanoid animals.

Meanwhile I’ll return to waiting for any word that lends hope for an North American release.

UPDATE – Ahh Snap, we get a trailer today too, catch it after the break.
