While it won’t likely threaten to steal any of Scott Pilgrim’s thunder, Studio Ghibli’s Tales from Earthsea is finally hitting theaters next week – directed by Goro Miyazaki, or Miyazaki Jr. rather than Sr. if you prefer.
I say finally because the film released to Japan in 2006, and pretty well every other continent on Earth since. Whether the wait for Disney to bring it here has anything to do with it having some of the most negative reviews I’ve ever seen for a Ghibli film remains to be seen next Friday – I like my first viewing of a Ghibli film to be in the theater.
In the meantime, catch Disney’s half attempt at a trailer after the break.
Wait, Miyazaki’s son is a director as well?
Disney better be preparing a Bluray Studio Ghibli set for christmas since the films deserve the special edition treatment.

I heard the reason that this took so long to release on US shores was because the SciFy channel had purchased the rights to make their own corny television movie/series and they had x-amount of years allotted to them so that their production wouldn’t collide with the “Miyazaki Jr.” film. Or something to that effect. Whatever the case, I’m excited.

This film really didn’t have the same magic that any of the other Ghibli films have, including the Isao Takahata directed ones. I usually try and set my expectations pretty low, but Earthsea really didn’t do it for me.
