Your Ivy the Kiwi? Contest Winner

Ivy the Kiwi?
Wow, you guys made that ridiculously hard.

First off, I want to thank everyone who entered and took time to add their fake Kiwi factoids, which ranged from ridiculously fantastic to some that I’m almost willing to believe might be true.

Deciding really left us with a narrow margin, but in the end there can be only one this time, and your winner is Shel, who opened our eyes to the horrible not-truth about the Kiwi-fruit actually being a Kiwi egg.

I’ll be getting in touch with you today about your copy of Ivy the Kiwi?, and I will likely never be able to eat a Kiwi fruit again, so thanks for that :/

Ys Seven Wants My Blood, I Gladly Give It

Ys Seven
My first few minutes with Ys Seven made me fear I’d fallen for an Albany ham scam, with the initial impression offering up some very typical RPG traits that encouraged turning off my PSP. There’s a tense peace after a long war, a King surrounded by vain and villainous characters (who hires these people?) and even a poor flower girl trying to get by just as we happen to stroll onto the scene – we being the ever eager Dogi and the ever silent Adol.

Sticking with it for a few more minutes led to a combat tutorial that seemed promising, teasing a free movement action RPG, and allowing the player to switch between actively controlled characters – a necessity because of attack types, which make certain characters more effective against certain enemies.

Holding down the attack button charges a gauge that allows for more powerful skill attacks to be used, and then it’s time to set off to investigate a newly discovered shrine as a favor for the King.

Between the kingdom steps and that shrine are plenty of the first come enemies, and suddenly this game is letting me charge around the screen, striking and killing, beating on carcasses after the fact to earn more items. It’s loose but focused, and most importantly, quick to get on with the business of being a game as I slash and level up at the same time I’m moving toward the destination in mind.

Then the game drops a large two-headed turtle on my head and instant death follows.

Gamesugar’s Ivy the Kiwi? Contest

Ivy the Kiwi? Contest
Given my recent affection for Ivy the Kiwi?, and my subsequent belief that you should all check it out, it seemed like working out some sort of giveaway / contest was in order. So here’s what we’ve got – courtesy of XSEED Games, one of you has the chance to win a Wii copy of Ivy the Kiwi?

Sounds pretty straightforward right?

So here’s the catch – all you have to do to win, is lie to us. More specifically, I’m looking for completely fake and untrue facts about Kiwis – the bird, not the fruit.

Did sailors use Kiwis to find oranges and fight off scurvy during the little discussed war of 1926? Did the United States parachute Kiwis into the Soviet Union to gather intelligence during the Cold War? You tell us!

Leave your Kiwi Factoid in the comments of this post before 12 PM EST on Sunday September 26th, 2010. Some combination of Team Sugar will pick their favorite entry and award a winner later the following day, most likely based on how ridiculous, creative, and humorous the entry is.

Good luck!

Review – Ivy the Kiwi?

Ivy the Kiwi?
Last year’s mobile game from Prope has returned for a Wii/DS combo release, though interviews have revealed that the Wii version preceded all other concerns – and it definitely shows.

Prope Studio founder Yuji Naka’s life after Sega is easy to typecast as one focused on the control side of gaming – the way we interact with the medium, not simply via the use of new peripherals but in exploring the way tactile actions and video output work together to create new experiences. Last year that focus had me tapping on a cereal box to vibrate a WiiMote with the release of Let’s Tap, but where that release came across more as an interesting technical demonstration, Ivy the Kiwi? is less on the esoteric and more about playtime with straight-forward appeal.

More over, Ivy feels like a return to form, a game of crafted levels designed for an instantly iconic character that is unavoidably as cute as a box of puppies, and finds a welcome place alongside other Naka creations such as Sonic the Hedgehog or Nights into Dreams

Your Next Dose of Ys

Ys: The Oath in Felghana
XSEED Games sent word about their next release in the arrangement with Falcom, with Ys: The Oath in Felghana due for North American PSP release before the end of this year. As with Ys Seven, expect two packages, with a limited edition that includes a soundtrack CD and a 4-inch by 6-inch 2011 desktop calendar featuring artwork from the game – suggested retail pricing puts the regular edition at $29.99 and the limited at $39.99.

It’s a bit hard to top everything they packed into the Ys Seven Limited Edition, but at least your PSP won’t be waiting very long for another dose of the series. Catch the full image of the limited edition here.

Ys SEVEN Contest Winners
I want to thank everyone who took the time to enter the code giveaway – it’s good to know I’m not alone in longing for a better grade of RPG. I really appreciated the comments everyone left, but of course in the end, there can be only one, er, make that two.

After a big Natal experience like circus spectacle at sugar headquarters this morning, which I totally forgot to tape, I drew two names, belonging to Lloyd and Celeph – so congrats, check your in-boxes for the codes, and let me know how Ys SEVEN does in the faith restoring department when you get a chance.

Ys Seven PSA & Giveaway

Ys Seven
Ys Seven hits store shelves tomorrow for your PSP, sporting a standard UMD release as well as an LCE that XSEED has stuffed with Falcom goodness. Being that I consider this year a pretty dreadful one for producing an RPG worth the investment of time and money, I’ve got plenty of expectations riding on this release.

But it occurs to me that maybe some of you don’t know what either a Ys or a Falcom is, and are left wondering if you should bother finding out. With that in mind, I’ve got my mitts on a couple of codes for a digital download of the title courtesy of Xseed Games – 2 to be exact.

So here’s the deal, drop me a line in the comment section of this post and tell me why you need this game to restore your faith in the RPG by Thursday August 19th at 11:59 pm est. I’ll draw two winners randomly from the comments on Friday and two of you can check the game out for yourself free of charge – and if you come back and tell me what you think, I’d probably dig that.

And finally, since I mentioned the LCE, you can catch two scans from the artbook that comes with that after the break.
