Review – Pokémon Black Version 2

Review Pokemon Black Version 2
For all the charms that have helped Pokémon endure consistent gamer love for so many years now, the visual seems to take priority. Starting a new adventure in the Unova region finds me without strategy or purpose, and once again choosing which of three Pokémon to start my roadtrip with based on visual affection – there was no contest by the way, Tepig or bust.

The formula is familiar and worn enough that I always feel a bit silly writing about a new entry, and yet each one is never long for stealing attention away from other releases. The first few hours proved unpredictable, insofar as I couldn’t have guessed which Pokémon might join my party along the way.

Certainly there are only a few waiting to be discovered in the first few steps between cities and earning gym badges, but which ones were claimed in the wild, and which of those would survive battles to evolve and stick around seemed delightfully random once again.

PSA – Your Shiny Pokémon Await

Shiny Pokemon
A friendly reminder came our way that Pokémon fans can get a jump on Nintendo’s upcoming Black & White versions via a GameStop offer in the US and Canada starting today, as well as get their hands on some shiny Pokémon.

If you’re in possession of Pokémon Diamond, Pearl, Platinum, HeartGold or SoulSilver versions, there’s a trio of Shiny Pokémon up for grabs by visiting your nearest GameStop with the game and your DS – namely Raikou, Entei, and Suicune – which apparently can later be transferred to Pokémon Black and/or White in order to unlock yet another Pokémon in either of those two games that isn’t available through regular gameplay – Pokémon Zoroark.

The offer starts today and runs through to February 6, 2011 – breaking down as follows;

Shiny Raikou – January 3rd – January 9th, 2011
Shiny Entei – January 17th – January 23rd, 2011
Shiny Suicune – January 31st – February 6th, 2011

Pokémon Black & White In March

Pokemon Black and White Versions
Nintendo’s combating your post-turkey coma with yet another release date, letting us know that the next installment of the Pokémon franchise will be hitting North American DS’ on March 6, 2011.

Pokémon Black Version and White Version offer two shades to choose from, and introduce a new region along with 150 new Pokémon – possibly bringing the overall number of Pokémon to something nearing incalculable.

If you’re wondering which version is right for you Nintendo offers the following – Legendary Pokémon Reshiram can only be caught in Black Version while White Version offers Legendary Pokémon Zekrom along with other Pokémon unique to each title. Black Version also features an urban area known as Black City, while White Version features greener pastures known as White Forest.

But wait, there’s more!

Both versions of the game feature changing seasons, with certain Pokémon appearing more often at different times. Players will also begin this adventure with one of three new starter Pokémon – the Grass-type Snivy, the Fire-type Tepig and the Water-type Oshawott.

Review – PokéPark Wii: Pikachu’s Adventure

PokePark Wii: Pikachus Adventure
Caught between the release of HeartGold & SoulSilver this year and the waiting game for the new Black & White editions next year, Pikachu and the gang have opted to get away from rigorous training and stat grinding for some relaxation on the Wii via the PokéPark. It’s a vacation easily labeled and largely written-off as kid friendly, a description that earnestly sounds a bit ridiculous given the number of children I’ve watched swarm handheld stations at events for the more portable offerings the house that Pikachu built is known for.

Perhaps we could label this release more free-range, with players turning the WiiMote sideways to take direct control of Pikachu, exploring the zones that comprise the PokéPark and grasping at another opportunity to touch the franchise by different means.

The priority of the PokéPark isn’t to catch them all, rather to meet them all, and if possible to become friends with them all. Certainly that touchy-feely angle sounds more childlike, but the label is more properly grounded in the simplistic design and approach, from the controls to the specific objectives on Pikachu’s todo list.

Your Pokémon Enigma (Stone)

Pokemon
The quest to keep my well worn Pokéwalker in my pocket continues, with news that HeartGold and SoulSilver Pokéfantatics can get their mitts on the Enigma Stone via wifi, and thus a chance to catch elusive Legendary Pokémon, Latias (SoulSilver) or Latios (HeartGold).

According to the fine print, the catch is that only players who have beaten the Elite Four, claimed the National Pokédex, and have two or fewer Wonder Cards can solve the riddle of the Enigma Stone in order to capture Latios or Latias.

So many Pokérules…

I haven’t seen an official news blurb on the Pokémon site yet, but word from the press release I’m looking at is that this opportunity starts on Saturday July 31st and continues through to Friday August 27th.

Update – The HeartGold & SoulSilver site now has the step by step details.

New Shades of Pokémon, in 2011

Pokemon
I’m just catching up with Nintendo’s buzz about confirmation that Pokémon Black Version & Pokémon White Version are heading to North American DS owners, along with a bit of art for new legendary Pokémon Reshiram and Zekrom.

When the games were originally announced for Japan there were plenty of people expressing surprise that the new titles would be hitting the DS rather than the platform we’re only a little over two weeks away from seeing – though that probably had more to do with disappointment rather than surprise.

Based on the title of this post you can probably conclude that I’m more surprised that the date for their arrival is a year from now, in Spring 2011, but I suppose we don’t have to worry about overdosing that way. All I know is that this is still a far cry from the Pokémon MMO I want.

While I ponder that, you can catch Reshiram and Zekrom after the break, along with a trailer for PokéPark Wii: Pikachu‘s Adventure – the minigame filled Wii title recieved a European release date of July 9, 2010 yesterday.

SugarRush – Episode 1

SugarRush
[podcast]http://www.gamesugar.net/podcast/SRE1_gamesugar.mp3[/podcast]
Hey Kids! It’s the very first episode of Sugar Rush – the Gamesugar Podcast – so start jumping and screaming right now!

Also consider pressing play, because we’d appreciate it.

For our first swing at the mic I’m joined by co-host Michael Tucker, who knows much more about Pokémon than I do, despite my time with HeartGold this week, and Poké-expert Kyattsuai drops by to school us in the Pokéarts and make us question whether you really can catch them all.

But wait, there’s more! Somehow we convinced 4cr’s Gregory Gay that he was doing their podcast while talking Perfect Dark and proving that no matter what we discuss, we’ll always turn it into more debate about Other M – though we also take time out to talk about Valve as often as possible too, assuming Tucker doesn’t pass out from flu meds.
