The Resident Evil Factor

Resident Evil 3DS
I couldn’t help remembering over the weekend that it was pretty well ten years ago that Resident Evil played a major factor in my purchase of a GameCube – zombie exclusivity was a harsh mistress back then.

And even though zombies can be had by the bucketful today, watching Jill Valentine slowly move through the tight corridors of Revelations’ ship at sea brings back plenty of warm memories – the more things change, the more they stay the same I suppose.

Anyway, stir your own memories with an overdose of Resident Evil video from both the 3DS titles and let me know what you think.

Capcom at CES

Capcom CES 2011
Other late night CES news I didn’t notice while distracted features a release date for Capcom’s sequel to Bionic Commando Rearmed, which hits the PlayStation 3 on February 1, 2011 for $14.99 and the 360 a day later for 1200 MS Points.

Okamiden also gets some love with more art, video, and screens showing off another partner for Chibi, Kurow, along with a wind based mini-game as well as what appears to be a Chibiterasu jam session in the sky.

Okamiden is still set to hit the Nintendo DS on March 15, 2011.

Case West Report – For A Few Zombies More

Dead Rising 2 Case West
Dead Rising 2’s Xbox exclusive duet, featuring the gruff talents of Chuck Greene and Frank West in a standalone epilogue to the events of Fortune City, is very much a fan driven affair. And while that earth shattering revelation sinks in and turns your world upside down, allow me a few more sentences to elaborate.

Whereas Case Zero functioned as a prequel, a release that lured players into the layered world of slapstick zombie slaying and reality TV characters that furnish the series, Case West services the expectation that the ride through Fortune City has made a fan of you, which if you have any interest in downloading this addition is a safe bet. But while Case West subsequently works to add to the experience of the retail release, the simplicity of playing to fan anticipation makes for a game that feels several shades lazy, or at the very least, far less interested in impressing the player.

A narrower path of narrative priority certainly contributes to that feeling, and the inability to play as Mr. West in single-player sessions is most certainly more likely to upset fans rather than please, and as the game unfolds it’s hard to ignore the idea that an assumption of fandom leads Capcom to believe that said fans will tolerate glaring shortcomings for another dose of Zombrex.

More Ghost Trick Demo Get

Ghost Trick Demo
Capcom has another taste of their phantom detective DS title Ghost Trick ready to sample, this time through the Nintendo DS Channel, giving players a chance to haunt Lynne’s apartment while looking to do some good.

Sissel’s quest to regain his memory and solve his own murder is another title getting the new year in gaming off to a quick start – the game is set to release on January 11, 2011.

Dead Rising 2: Case West – Dated and Priced

Dead Rising 2 Case West
I was starting to wonder if Capcom would make their December timeline, but have no fear, your followup to Dead Rising 2 will bring Chuck and Frank together on the 360 December 27th, and run you a bit more than Case Zero at 800 Microsoft Points.

Carry on.

Your Recommended Dose of 3DS Resident Evil

Resident Evil 3DS
Capcom dispatched North American updates on their two 3DS Resident Evil projects, perhaps to spare some of us translation woes over the info coming from Japan this week, or perhaps to make extra sure we all hear that – “hey kids, you can run and shoot and chew gum at the same time in a Resident Evil game!”

It’s probably worth mentioning a few times that this startling ability only appears attached to talk about the Mercenaries 3DS project, which brings back stages from Resident Evil 4 and 5 along with currently listed characters Chris Redfield, Hunk, Krauser and Claire Redfield for some run and gun fun – visit the Japanese site here.

The other and more tradition title, Revelations, has something I don’t see very often associated with a Resident Evil game – concept art, which of course gives a glimpse into another of Chris and Jill’s mutation filled vacations.

Catch it after the break.

More Dead Rising 2 in December

Dead Rising 2: Case West
Capcom announced that the Xbox 360 exclusive Case West addition to Dead Rising 2 will be releasing in December – word on what day is still lacking.

Teaming Chuck with Dead Rising’s Frank West offers access to Frank’s camera for all your photo taking needs, along with new combo weapons and items. Perhaps more importantly, Capcom mentions that players going through the game solo will take control of Chuck, while Frank will be AI controlled, a mode in which Frank cannot be killed. As for deciding who gets to be Frank in co-op mode, I recommend rock, paper, scissors.
