Can Microsoft Kinect With Gamers?

Connect with Kinect
As we all know, Microsoft held a large scale press extravaganza last night to showcase their new “Kinect” peripheral. What we’ve known as Project Natal hasn’t changed much with this new name, but there are some key factors in all of this that still need to be announced before I can see myself proudly displaying it under my TV.

I’ve been up all night attempting to write this article, until one specific line hit me while talking with Jamie about it: The price of novelty. The price of novelty is a simple rule about how much you are willing to spend on a device, for the length of time you think having it will be interesting. My hesitation in writing anything quite yet is the lack of a price point. Sure there have been rumors floating around, but nothing set in stone, and no prices that yet sound very appealing to me. What I’m left with is wondering how long will I, as a gamer, be able to enjoy the novelty of the Kinect?

Super Scribblenauts
Explosive adjectives are great, but improved controls is the keyword we were looking for in this latest E3 trailer for Super Scribblenauts. Having found hope and promise in the pitch, the only thing missing is some much needed hands on time this week.

In the meantime, catch said trailer after the break.

Trailer Park – Star Wars: The Old Republic

Star Wars: The Old Republic
Back at E3 2009, Bioware’s cinematic glimpse into The Old Republic stole plenty of attention, almost entirely by offering fans hope that the franchise could regain some cred after years of abuse. This year is no different, except that the latest cinematic take on the game might put expectations through the roof.

Catch over five minutes of what is undoubtedly the only Star Wars game you need to care about this week, after the break.

UPDATE – EA went and yanked the video, see, I’ve been telling you those guys are no fun for years and there’s more proof :/
UPDATE 2 – Video is Back

Questionable Intelligence – Meet Kinect

Kinect
What a day yesterday, with Project Natal getting rebranded as Kinect – see it’s like it connects you even more to your 360, but also hits on Kinetics! Get it?!

Okay, so maybe I haven’t been blown away by the games so far, which may or may not work very well, but as one Editor reminded me this morning there’s still the Minority Report styled menu controls.

As much fun as I might have poking fun at this device before Microsoft’s Press Conference reiterates why everyone should run out and buy it this fall, I feel obligated to warn you about some very disturbing video I saw this morning – detailing what became of one unfortunate family with the device in question.

Video evidence after the break.

Selling Epic Mickey

Epic Mickey
Of all the photos you might be catching of the Convention Center before E3 begins, and all the gaming imagery gloriously plastered across the building and the city, Epic Mickey is the sharpest bit of marketing I’ve seen in quite a long time.

Since the show hasn’t started yet, I really have no idea what to expect – or how much of the game has been reworked since the initial reveal – but someone has done a terrific job with the art on this campaign, and it’s deserving of a seldom given nod as far as I’m concerned.

Catch a bit more Mickey after the break.

Welcome to E3 2010!

E3 2010
As expected, Los Angeles is one crazy and buzzing place today. Microsoft’s strange and possibly surreal Natal event goes down tonight, and Hideo Kojima was on the town signing autographs earlier today – hard to believe the Convention Center doesn’t officially open the showroom doors until Tuesday.

Our own Aileen Viray was just down that way, and being much smarter than me brought a camera along with her – allowing for the revelation that a giant poster of Kevin Butler will be looking down and swinging a Move controller over everyone this year.

Catch a quick glimpse after the break.

Hard Corps: Uprising – Contents May Vary

Hard Corps: Uprising
After watching some rough footage for Konami and Arc System Works’ Hard Corps: Uprising, I don’t know if every Contra fan is going to readily get on board – if you’ve met any you know they always bring high expectations and a well warranted hesitation to new entries in the franchise.

Even with the poor quality of the video, the game looks to offer plenty of what I’m after however – speed, gorgeous backgrounds, and character designs and animations that pop with a pulse. Show me some bosses this week and I’m ready to enlist for this anime nostalgia trip.

You can catch footage of a single and co-op run after the break. Let me know if you agree, or if you think I need to take my meds before the show starts.
