Review – ClaDun: This is an RPG!

ClaDun This is an RPG
“This is an RPG!” declares ClaDun’s subtitle – and the statement is most definitely warranted. Actually, ClaDun is more of an action RPG but I won’t be a stickler. I will serve you with a warning though: ClaDun is old school in both style and substance. It’s a dungeon crawler that will ask you to spend time grinding. You will have to repeat multiple floors and entire dungeons many, many times, and you WILL die. You will die a lot.

At the game’s onset you are introduced to Pudding, a female wanna-be adventurer, and Soma, her lap dog male companion. Pudding, we discover, is terminally ill with “die laughing disease” and is desperately seeking Arcanus Cella, a mythical realm where you find whatever you are looking for. As it turns out, Pudding is looking for treasure, which is the perfect motive for a dungeon crawler.

Derezzing Tron: Legacy

Tron Legacy
I didn’t exist when Tron hit theaters twenty-eight years ago, but elements of the film so permeate pop culture that it’s impossible not to be familiar with it, even if you’ve never seen it. When Tron: Legacy trailers began to disperse across the internets, intriguing me with their dark Daft Punk soundtrack and impressive amounts of shiny, I made it my business to go seek out the original film, so that I might be prepared to digest the sequel. Having seen Tron Guy and lightcycles and old jokes from The Simpsons and Family Guy, I wasn’t entirely sure what to expect.

It was weird. My impression was distinctly that the film would have been received very different in 1982, but now, as a twenty-something in 2010, there was a real problem. Nevermind dated effects; Tron was a film that only made sense in the loosest way, with simplistic and sometimes unclear ideas. The world of Tron was one that it wasn’t easy to grasp, because the film doesn’t really tell you what that world is. There’s no mythology there, only the bare bones of a concept to fuel a special-effects adventure.

I walked into Tron: Legacy looking for the concepts and ideas of the original film to be expanded and developed into a modern story that would satisfy my need for detail, for understanding, and for a mythology that simply didn’t exist in the original film. Sadly, Tron: Legacy makes a tradition of vagaries and half-ideas, equally unformed and unsatisfying.

Dragon Quest VI Dated

Dragon Quest VI
Nintendo’s all aflutter announcing that Japan’s exclusive access to Dragon Quest VI is coming to an end, with Realms of Revelation hitting the DS in North America next year – February 14, 2011 to be specific. I know many of you will have been waiting a very long time for this announcement.

As sweet as this news is, I still don’t recommend trying to pass this off as a Valentine’s gift to your sweetheart, unless your significant other is awesome, then by all means proceed.

Also catch the trailer after the break.

Trailer Park – Final Fantasy IV Complete Collection

Final Fantasy IV Complete Collection
Square-Enix’s site for the Japanese PSP title bringing together Final Fantasy IV and The After Years is go, so screenshots are making the rounds today along with the trailer, which you can catch after the break.

Regardless of your stance on Final Fantasy revisits, I hope we can all agree that airships are still as cool as ever.

Hydrophobia Pure

Hydrophobia Pure
Dark Energy Digital’s episodic action title caused a sizable divide when it hit Xbox LIVE Arcade earlier this year, with plenty of outlets calling it broken while others called it inventive, and plenty more fell somewhere in-between the extremes.

I was anticipating some changes for the next installment, but today the studio announced an overhaul for the first episode based on critical and community feedback. Launching tomorrow, Hydrophobia Pure is a free update for those that already own the game, and a price reduced title for those that haven’t taken the plunge – the game will move from 1200 Microsoft points to 800.

The studio also released a developer diary showcasing changes made, which you can catch after the break – you can also catch a rather large list of retooled features at the official site here.

Regarding Anniversaries

Super Mario Bros 25th Anniversary
I wouldn’t have anticipated Mario tossing his trademark hat into the ring for the most divisive release of 2010, but here we are. The 25th Anniversary Edition, which essentially wraps a book and CD around the SNES release of Super Mario All-Stars has produced equal shares of grumblings and indifference from some acquaintances this week, while at other places, Eurogamer comes to mind, you can hear people rustling pitchforks over the release and review.

Odd as it may sound, at no point did I stop to consider this a game release, or something that was reviewable – just a commemorative grab that made it to North America in time for the holidays and potentially prettied up the shelf. All-Stars simply fills the inside of the box to justify the package getting space on retail shelves – if it was just a random box of Mario swag, where on earth would poor Nintendo stock it after all?

In some ways the release could come across as something better suited to Club Nintendo, but then of course it would cost one hundred times more. In other ways the release could have offered more not only from the Mario library to create a truly commemorative game, but also as a videogame release, seeing as that is the medium Mario is celebrating his place as a founding institution of.

Nanosuits, etc.

Crysis 2
Important warning: if you’re concerned about the welfare of your face, stop now and go do something else. If you feel you may need your face for later, leave your computer and do not return. Gamesugar accepts no responsibility for the possibility that your face may be blown off by the force of the following trailer for Crysis 2.

If there was any doubt that an urban sprawl would offer infinitely more intriguing options for the wielder of the nanosuit than the original jungle, it’s been washed away in a flood of images depicting the player kicking cars, hurling aliens off ledges and bounding across rooftops at super speed. Crysis 2 appears to be shaping up into a defining FPS experience, and if you dare risk the safety of your own face, you can check out the most recent trailer after the break.
