How Would You Change Nintendo’s 3DS?

Filed under: News Feed — Tags: , , — Sam Scott Given @ 10:15 am

3DS
As polished as the 3DS presented itself at E3 last week, it’s been floating around lately that Nintendo has gone on the record saying that the 3DS’ design is not 100% final – so the question begs to be asked, what would you, the gamer who ultimately buys the thing, change?

When the original DS was announced under the codename “Nitro” it had a very different look from the final launch design, some say for the better, some for the worst. Nintendo is very good about getting feedback on their consoles and either changing them before launch, or soon after releasing revisions that cater to fan needs and wants.

Sin & Punishment 2 Has TV Spots…?!

Sin & Punishment 2
Way back in the dark days when I wondered when Sin & Punishment 2 would release and how much of a push Nintendo would give it, there were a few people who said –

“What do you expect them to do for a niche title? Give it a television ad?”

That was fair game back then too, because there was zero chance of something like that happening. And yet, if you continue on after the break, you can catch the television spot reminding you that the game releases this Sunday.

Incredibly strange amazing days – if I actually see this on tv during the week my head might explode. Has there ever been an ad for a Treasure game on television before?

Also, touche Nintendo, touche – though you should have asked me for a quote for the spot too.

Step Aside Wii Speak?

Headbanger Headset for Wii
Since it’s mentioned with enthusiasm in our video for Conduit 2, I thought I should post an image of PDP’s Headset – which at the moment is being talked of as a great peripheral for High Voltage’s fps sequel, but I’m more immediately thinking of Monster Hunter Tri when I look at.

The headset is due out in October for $24.99. I would have posted this last week when it was more topical, but because the headset tethers gamers to the Wii via the USB cord I wanted to find out how long said cord was, which I’m now told is over 10 feet.

More specs after the break.

Interview – Sam Roberts: Festival Director of IndieCade

On the last day of this year’s E3 Expo I met with Sam Roberts at the unassuming Indiecade booth for an interview in which we talked about the festival and the games it aims to support. I expected to see a lineup of interesting titles and hear a spiel about independent games’ superiority to their mainstream counterparts.

Instead, I saw a lineup of outrageous, nearly mind blowing titles and had a fascinating discussion with Sam about the role independent games serve in the relation to the overall games industry.

E3 Impressions – Knights of the Nintendo Roundtable

Nintendo Roundtable
As with previous years at E3, Nintendo again invited a select few to join them in one of the Convention Center’s Theater rooms for a developers’ roundtable event, the climax of a day beginning with their press conference and ending with Shigeru Miyamoto and company speaking with press in a smaller setting for an hour and a half.

Somehow we managed to get on the list this year, and it was hard not to feel like tagging along with an elite club, especially because of the strict rule that no recording devices were allowed.

Miyamoto brought out members of Nintendo’s own elite club – The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword’s producer Eiji Aonuma, and Nintendo 3DS hardware producer Hideki Konno.

The talk that followed focused primarily on Zelda: Skyward Sword, the 3DS, and 3DS games – namely Nintendogs + Cats, Steel Diver, and Starfox, with most of the time restrained to those topics.

Refresh Rate – TMNT IV: Turtles in Time

TMNT IV: Turtles in Time
There was a time when the turtles were bigger than pro wrestling. As it’s been a number of years since the pinnacle of their success, it’s probably best to specify that I’m referring, of course, to the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. Undoubtedly, there is a certain generation of people who don’t need that specification; when they hear ‘the turtles’, their minds make that immediate synaptic connection to the Ninja Turtles. But, as time passes, there is bound to be ever more gamers and movie fans who weren’t there to experience Turtle Power first hand.

Consider this your time machine.

E3 Impressions – A Tale of Two Downloadable Titles

Downloadable Titles
Two of the top downloadable games I saw at E3 2010 are definitely Konami’s Hard Corps: Uprising and Square-Enix’s Space Invaders Infinity Gene. Child of Eden was stealing plenty of the limelight and my attention, but these games deserve some recognition.

Konami is releasing Hard Corps: Uprising on Xbox LIVE Arcade and PlayStation Network this fall, and judging by the E3 demo, it’s coming along really well. The art shift makes it easy to call it a refreshing take on a celebrated franchise, whose concept and gameplay controls are still adopted from early Contra games – of course new features such as online co-op mode and leaderboards tag along for the nostalgia trip.

I couldn’t help but notice “working title” on the E3 sign with Hard Corps. Does that mean that they’re considering putting “Contra” back in the title? I’m going to guess probably not.
