Review – PokéPark Wii: Pikachu’s Adventure

PokePark Wii: Pikachus Adventure
Caught between the release of HeartGold & SoulSilver this year and the waiting game for the new Black & White editions next year, Pikachu and the gang have opted to get away from rigorous training and stat grinding for some relaxation on the Wii via the PokéPark. It’s a vacation easily labeled and largely written-off as kid friendly, a description that earnestly sounds a bit ridiculous given the number of children I’ve watched swarm handheld stations at events for the more portable offerings the house that Pikachu built is known for.

Perhaps we could label this release more free-range, with players turning the WiiMote sideways to take direct control of Pikachu, exploring the zones that comprise the PokéPark and grasping at another opportunity to touch the franchise by different means.

The priority of the PokéPark isn’t to catch them all, rather to meet them all, and if possible to become friends with them all. Certainly that touchy-feely angle sounds more childlike, but the label is more properly grounded in the simplistic design and approach, from the controls to the specific objectives on Pikachu’s todo list.

Review – Fist of the North Star: Ken’s Rage

Fist of the North Star: Ken's Rage
In many ways the Eighties were a simpler time, when a man could wander the post nuclear apocalyptic landscape secure in the knowledge that the good glowed with blue auras while the sinister shined red, and acupressure specific fist attacks created a reality where if someone screamed “WATTA!” after hitting you, well, you were probably already dead. At least that’s what Fist of the North Star taught me, my first taste coming via the anime that joined Akira and Fighting Seizure Robots in painting my earliest imaginings of what an incredibly cool place Japan must be.

While many years of studious effort to understand the culture that produced such offerings since then has yielded successful addictions, there are still many things about Japan I fail to understand.

Koei is one of those things, a company that I am aware makes videogames every year, but which I have never had much luck in grasping the sensibilities of. In many ways, Fist of the North Star strikes me as an attempt to rectify that situation, applying the Dynasty Warrior trope to a manga series rather than whatever a Dynasty Warriors game is typically about.

It all seems to revolve around the Japanese word “Musou,” which gets poorly translated here as something akin to “The Only One,” or “Without Equal.” My understanding of Koei’s use of the term is a series of games where waves upon waves of enemies come to kick your ass and in turn have their own kicked.

Given the subject matter of Fist of the North Star and Kenshiro’s lonely quest across the wasteland, this all seems like a workable arrangement. And the results are not entirely unsuccessful given the amount of fun I’ve gotten from the release, but there are limits and obligatory missteps, nagging bits of bad-habit design lingering from the past like phantoms in the code; stubborn, unbending, unchanging code.

Your Earth Defense Force Update

Earth Defense Force: Insect Armageddon
D3 offers a brief bite of local co-op video for Insect Armageddon, which you can catch after the break.

Local co-op comes in addition to the previously mentioned three-player online campaign mode and a six-player survival battle royale. D3 has also updated the weapon count, doubling the 150 count to 300+ at present, and the suggested retail pricing for the title is currently listed at $39.95 USD for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 when the game releases in the Spring of 2011.

Okamiden Before the Spring

Okamiden
Capcom revealed a few details about Chibiterasu’s arrival on North American DS’ today, specifically that the event will be taking place on March 15, 2011, and that the cost should run you about $29.99 USD.

There was also mention of a pre-order bonus via GameStop, which doesn’t seem nearly as grand as what Japan eventually got on top, but whatcha gonna do?

Actually what you can do, apparently, is loiter around the Okami Facebook page, where Capcom is mentioning fabulous prizes for those fans that drop by and play with the Goblin Mask Facebook app. The PR used words like “win a 3DS, a copy of the game, Chibiterasu plushies” – so maybe drop by there and see what’s up with all that, though one expects it may be a while before you can really win any of those things.

Let’s Unbox – No More Heroes 2 : Hopper’s Edition

No More Heroes 2: Hopper's Edition
First-rate Sugarfiend Ujn Hunter had an import order placed for Marvelous’ swagged-out Japanese edition of No More Heroes 2 before they even knew they were making it.

Marvelous’ description of what was inside and on the discs left some questions, so with the release upon us, I’ve been nagging him for two days straight to rip it open and give us a tour, and he did, which is why we now know that The Hopper’s Edition has a motion styled / voice-acted comic, among other treats.

Catch some pics after the break.

What the Smurf?

the Smurfs
Capcom is bringing the Smurfs to iPhone… yes, I just wrote that, and it’s apparently factual to boot.

As a tie-in to next summer’s film, Capcom is making a social-rific game with the franchise where players rebuild Smurf village this November- Gargamel wrecked the joint, how he finally found it I don’t know.

Starting with a single mushroom house and a plot of land, players will be able to construct specialized houses, grow gardens and crops, build bridges, and play several mini-games.

If they want to get family friendly and nostalgic at the same time, they should get to work on another Duck Tales, or maybe Darkwing Duck, that would also be acceptable.

Persona 2: Innocent Sin – Then and Now

Persona 2: Innocent Sin
Leaving no Japanese stone unturned, Famitsu turns up intro video for the recently revealed PSP edition of Persona 2: Innocent Sin. As much as knee-jerk fanism makes me excited at the probability of finally seeing a packaged version of Innocent Sin in North America, I’m having a hard time imagining how Atlus might go about bringing it here – mostly because one imagines that other Persona 2 will turn up as well, and confuse the hell out of us poor consumers.

I’m not even trying to be sarcastic there either, writing about two Persona 2’s could get really confusing. Makes me wonder if Atlus will make us wait here for some sort of double-pack super-duper Persona 2 edition that proves too tempting to simply write off as “another one of those damn Atlus PSP ports.”

But who knows.

In the meantime, I thought it might be fun to check out this new video alongside that of the original PSOne release.
