Derby Dogs
Aksys Games brings the dog track to WiiWare with Derby Dogs this week, entirely important because it reminded me of the greatest sport ever imagined within a videogame – of course I’m speaking of poison chihuahua racing.

If you’re unfamiliar with the sport, you can catch some video after the break, or consult the nearest available copy of God Hand.

Review – Sonic the Hedgehog 4: Episode I

I never owned a Sega console. I thought I’d come right out and say that, so there’s no confusion. I am not attached to Sonic; indeed, when I was growing up, Sonic was the enemy—the figurehead for those dark, unknown other children, playing their Genesis and carrying out Sega’s terrible bidding.

My encounters with Sonic—The Blue Satan—were largely exclusive to instances where I would commandeer my cousin’s Game Gear on thanksgiving. It had color; Tetris could not compete for my attention. Now I’m a little older and a little more polytheistic with regards to my console allegiances, but I still may not be the ideal test subject for the coherent nostalgia beam conjured by Sega’s latest Sonic release, the wholly digital Sonic 4.

Bit.Trip Fate
Duke Nukem only thinks he’s captured all the PAX buzz, but Gaijin Games brings the real deal with the next installment in Commander Video’s saga – a rail shooter with an actual rail, where players use the Nunchuk to control the Commander and the WiiMote to aim and fire.

The Bit.trip site mentions in-game appearances from Super Meat Boy and Mr. Robotube, as well as work from chipmusic artist Minusbaby.

Catch the trailer after the break.

Cave Story

A lone developer once sat in his home in Japan and committed himself to making the most hauntingly fantastic independent videogame ever. Five years later, he emerged with Cave Story.

A lot of eloquent praise has been given to Cave Story over the years and there’s not much that I can add to what’s already been said, but there are a few things that struck me during my most recent play through of the title in its new WiiWare form and I can’t help wanting to write a love letter of my own.

The nigh-perfection of this simple title made by a single man (Pixel is Daisuke Amaya’s self-appointed handle) was and is far-and-away a greater achievement than anything I’ve experienced from the professional industry in many years – if nowhere else than on a tasteful, emotional level.

Review – Castlevania: The Adventure ReBirth

Castlevania The Adventure ReBirth
Spending time with Konami’s rebirth of Castlevania during the holidays has reminded me that new releases in the series don’t deserve an official seal of approval until I find myself confronted by a fairly simple objective, died multiple times trying to achieve said goal, and tossed the controller in anger.

Since this occurred several times last week, we’re good to revisit the Belmont clan and discuss all things short of my issues with gaming rage.
