Pata Pata Demo-Pon

Patapon 3 Demo
Yesterday the PlayStation Blog added a quick Patapon chant-out before the start of the long weekend, letting everyone know that a multiplayer demo for Patapon 3 would be available this coming Tuesday, July 6 – thankfully free from PlayStation Plus exclusivity.

Aside from checking out the Superhero Patapon in this latest entry to the series, the multiplayer side will offer a glimpse at online play via the Internet – so if you aren’t too worn-out from your July 4th festivities there’s chant filled battles aplenty to be had next week.

If you’re the impatient sort, you could always try your luck with the Japanese version today.

Your Morning Dose Of Ridicolous

Sony 3D
Wednesday’s IGN posting with words from Sony’s Shuhei Yoshida offered the net brave new levels of comment fodder on the subject of Sony’s 3D aspirations in comparison to Nintendo’s E3 3D upheaval.

I usually tune Industry nonsense out, but choice bits here included –

“I have hope that they have a broader perspective with 3D,” Yoshida said. “When you listen to what they are saying about the effect of 3D perspective to the games, they are saying the same message we are, but they don’t have to bash some small part of what the other company is doing.”

and;

“I think as an industry we should preach this new perspective, from a very large cinema screen to a small portable, because that helps advancing the games and the game industry,” he said. “We’d like to work together to promote 3D.”

That Nintendo has “bashed” on 3D glasses technology seems questionable, since so many people seem to agree that the glasses are a major drawback. That the comment is blown out of proportion in typical Interwebz style is also a given. Admittedly it is hard to avoid when one company seems to suggest that another is breaking the prime directive and derailing the future.

The quotes have also drawn renewed attention to the uphill battle Sony may be in for in marketing 3D as a major feature of the PlayStation 3, especially if surveys suggesting that nearly 70% of Japanese respondents have no interest in making the upgrade anytime soon.

We can bat the ball back and forth on that for months to come, but what’s really stuck in my back the most is that anyone from Sony could speak such words with a straight face at the exact same time that the company can ascend a stage and market motion controls as if they just invented the one and only “real deal” – or the premise that they are more accurate and responsive than the competition.

Seems typically hypocritical to me and probably not worth the mentioning – after all, if we stopped to point out every silly thing a company representative said, we’d have to build some sort of daily post infrastructure using glib write ups that leave the actual games discussions behind – can you imagine?

PixelJunk Shooter 2, and Other Sony Bits

Pixeljunk Shooter 2
Feel like getting eaten? That’s where PixelJunk Shooter 2 plans to pick up, directly following the original. The game’s also bringing online multiplayer and ghosting options along with online ranking when it hits the PlayStation Network later this year.

Other Sony bits grabbing attention from yesterday are on the PSP front, with Patapon 3 aiming for a release this fall – complete with a rather stark teaser promising a demo on June 23.

And least I forget, Valkyria Chronicles 2 has a date with my PSP on August 31.

Checking In On Sony – Or Checking Sony In…

Sony Press Conference
I’m not sure I’ve ever seen so little information stretched over such a long period of time, almost like how writers once got paid by the word – except that this is E3 time which I’m sure makes the list of most expensive time wherever time is priced.

Pulling for a rebranding of the PSP didn’t make me think some new ads was all they would do, and do such a poor job of it – as if the entire problem is you either didn’t know it existed before today, or need to know what a kid thinks of it before making a purchasing decision. At least the PSP has a great lineup of third party titles in the pipe, that much is true.

I suppose part of me really resents being shown how to use a Move controller as if this technology was just invented by Sony yesterday and we all need to be eased into the use of it. Why not just say “like Wii but better?” – the videos are almost duplicating the original Wii spots anyway. Sony really reversed the whole “show don’t tell” idea I was enjoying earlier today.

Even seeing Gabe Newell walk out on stage didn’t make me think he was suddenly a convert of the technology underneath the hood of the PS3 – rather I am wondering what Faustian deal has gone on behind the curtains. Keep in mind that I’ll take Twisted Metal away and be slightly merrier, but Sony is so far removed from the company that convinced me to buy a PS3 before a Wii (It’s a Fact) that I can’t even recognize the company today.

There’s plenty more to say, especially about Playstation Plus, but a few of us here earnestly need a little bit more time to feel like we even get what just happened.

What is Malicious?

Malicious
A fair enough question to ask, but all we know so far is that it’s a downloadable PS3 title from Alvion. A Japanese teaser site offers some screenshots, which you can catch after the break.

This news is joined by today’s other Japanese teaser site, from Sony, which the finest minds the Net has to offer wager is another installment of Patapon.

I’m gonna suggest that all this teasing is what’s most malicious at the moment.

Your PS3 Can Do This, Tomorrow

3D PS3
Sony’s made it official over at the PlayStation Blog – the HD stereoscopic 3D PS3 revolution begins for North America tomorrow. They also want you to know that the console has always been equipped and ready for this event, which makes me feel that there may be an overdose of who did 3D first chest banging in our future.

Anyone lucky enough to own a PS3 and a 3D television (where do you get your money and can I borrow some?) can check out the following games and demos tomorrow – WipEout HD (full game) – Super Stardust HD (full game) – MotorStorm Pacific Rift (demo) – PAIN (Downtown area and tutorial along with three modes, including two new modes created specifically with stereoscopic 3D in mind, Alien Toss and Ice Breaker).

I’ve heard that Wipeout HD doesn’t include the Fury Pack DLC in 3D. I’ve also heard that if you already own the full games in this list that you can upgrade them for free, which is good, because you’re probably going to be paying off your home electronics bill for quite awhile.

In Memory Of – My PSP 2000

In Memory
Prior to establishing Gamesugar, my PSP-2000 had developed a condition I’ve come to refer to as “PSP Leprosy” – a series of strange blotches staining the screen in permanent places. At the time I was quite concerned that this would cut its working career short, but the handheld soldiered on, ready to meet the new challenges that lay ahead during the year in gaming that is 2010.

However, during a recent adhoc co-op session for Metal Slug Double X, it was clear that my PSP was running much slower than its partner, with significantly longer load-times and finally a screen freezing glitch that forced me to remove the battery to turn it off. Still I held out hope that it might overcome this, only to have the freezing get progressively worse, until I was forced to accept that the patient was lost last night during an attempted revisit of Jeanne D’arc.

It’s impossible not to question why the young are sometimes cut short, long before their time and prior to releases like Valkyria Chronicles 2, Patchwork Heroes, and Metal Gear Solid Peace Walker – potential joys my PSP will never know. It’s true that the candle that burns twice as bright often lasts only half as long, and surely my PSP was able to attend gaming events and sample review code that made its short life far from ordinary.

I don’t expect an answer regarding the wisdom of the great designer in this situation, I can only mourn the passing of a portable device that gave itself in the service of gamers, in the hope of bringing a better level of information and game writing to their lives.

Assuming you’ll indulge me, a list of this PSP’s published service record can be found after the break, a permanent memorial in remembrance of its accomplishments.

Goodnight my first PSP, while I will undoubtedly be forced to replace you with another, you will never be forgotten.
