Review – Might & Magic: Clash of Heroes HD

Might and Magic Clash of Heroes
Though the Great Fall of the PSN has much delayed us, that service’s howling, furious resurrection has finally allowed Team Sugar to report on the matter of Might and Magic: Clash of Heroes, the HD upgrade of 2009’s DS original.

Clash of Heroes exists in some infinite limbo between puzzle game and turn-based strategy. The goal of each battle is to deplete the enemy’s health by firing attacks into his endzone—which is carefully protected by his army of units. Units can be organized to form attack formations or defensive wall formations. Additionally, specialized hero units can be purchased and employed for devastating attacks.

The primary task here is to maximize the number of actions that can be performed in one turn. The player has a limited number of moves, and while certain actions may grant additional moves, one must be mindful of the most efficient, useful maneuvers on the field. Combat, accordingly, is as much a puzzle as a strategy game.

Under the Radar – Clash of Heroes

Clash of Heroes
If the PlayStation Network release of Critter Crunch taught us anything last year – and it did – it was that when Capybara goes 2D in HD, the results are simply gorgeous.

I have zero concern that the HD remake of one of my favorite DS games from last year won’t validate that belief, especially since there’s screens to prove it – and some shiny art to boot. The game itself is pretty damn good too.

Mind you I still wish they could drop the Might & Magic part of the title, but aside from that there’s no reason not to have this XBLA/PSN title on your radar.

Capybara Art – Clash of Heroes Edition

Capybara Art
I really want the Refresh Rate to be a category worth the special place in your heart I insist you give it. Ideally it should be less about re-writing prspeak and more about being a Zen garden of all things noteworthy and composed of awesome-ite, which I assure you is a real element, so don’t go grabbing the periodic table hoping to prove me wrong.

Back to the point, this taste of concept art from Might & Magic Clash of Heroes that Capybara Games offered us should help set my lofty goal in motion.

If you’re wondering whether or not you should care about Clash of Heroes, you can catch my review of the game here. Otherwise you can catch the goods after the break.

Clash of Heroes

Despite the low profile release, and a name only someone with a shirt reading Dungeon Master could love, Capybara’s DS entry into the strategy genre stuffs more game up my stocking than I’d anticipated this season.

Sitting alongside recognizable brands on the store shelf, you’d be forgiven for going a tad cross-eyed reading the title Might & Magic: Clash of Heroes. The game is filled with the knights, elves, talking trees and evil hell spawn the title brings to mind. And while I don’t intend to undermine the effort but probably will anyway, such elements are just window dressing for a game more focused on proving Capybara an undisputed leader in creating addictive gaming experiences.

It’s not like I’d accuse Capy of having a shtick or suggest that the game repeats an established formula. But there’s definitely an emerging sense of familiar sensations attached to their work, and fortunately for us this is a good thing.
