Refresh Rate – Super Ghouls ‘n Ghosts

Super Ghouls n Ghosts
Throughout the years, countless storytellers have taken up the legends of Arthur, monster-hunting king of yore, and his heroes of the round table; these storytellers sometimes seemed on a quest against one another to put Camelot’s king and his brothers in continually more romantic and fantastical adventures. While the chivalrous hero of Capcom’s 1991 SNES platformer Super Ghouls ‘n Ghosts may not be the same Arthur of circular table-fame, he certainly shares his name, appearance, and general quest; that is, to save a princess from a slew of horrible beasts.

Arthur begins in a classic iron suit of armor, purely utilitarian and consistent with the mythical prehistoric defenders of Britain, but he can uncover several upgrades that become increasingly more ornate and regal. The suit upgrades also magnify the power of whichever weapon Arthur happens to be holding onto; he starts with a lance but other options encountered through the game include speedy daggers, frightful bows, and useless torches. No matter how terrific Arthur appears in his shiny armor, a single hit from an enemy instantly rips our hero from his protective shell, leaving him to carry on in nothing but his skivvies.

But aren’t suits of armor notoriously hard to put on and take off? One wonders if perhaps Arthur expected his quest to the princess to be a rather lackadaisical journey, and designed his suits of armor accordingly, so that when he finally reached his damsel he could more speedily disrobe and make with the obligatory reward sex.

NOE Recommends More Wii in Your Diet

Play Wii
Not Surprisingly, Nintendo of Europe thinks you should play more Wii, and is trying out the new slogan on their website “Play Wii and warm your gamer’s heart!”

It was kind of hard not to laugh since that sounds like the silly type of thing I might say on the right day. To back up the heartwarming argument, they’ve put together a promotional video of first and third party releases – admittedly I have a weakness for videos that slap together lots of great game footage.

I think it’s safe to say that Nintendo’s console is warming more hearts than it’s icing over these days, and this type of video is definitely aimed at the gamers Nintendo was accused of ignoring not more than a year ago.

Catch the video after the break and let me know what you think.

Masaya Matsuura’s WINtA

WINtA
Non-profit publisher OneBigGame has announced a new project in their initiative to work with leading game designers in raising funds for charity, revealing that rhythm master and NanaOn-Sha President Masaya Matsuura will be donating his time, along with Triangle Studios, to create a new music rhythm game for the iPhone / iPod touch, titled WINtA.

As for what to expect from WINtA, the early word is that the title will combine pattern recognition and the tendency to tap along with the rhythm, while also going beyond the “highway of colored symbols” we’ve been living on since the rhythm genre began.

Matsuura’s own words offered a bit more insight,

“…further down the line WINtA will also very much involve music artists, VJs and gamers around the world in this project. I can’t wait to see the creative vision that we have for WINtA finally become a reality later this year.”

So to make a long story short, I have no idea what to expect at the moment. Anything is possible when NanaOn-Sha is involved, so stay tuned.

Trailer Park – Deus Ex : Human Revolution

Deus Ex Human Revolution
Square-Enix France just posted your cinematic look at Eidos Monteal’s Deus Ex: Human Revolution. Following a proud Square tradition, this glimpse is entirely free of insights into what playing the game might be like, but it does have at least eight out of ten essential sci-fi nutrients – so I’m terribly torn and feeling like as far as watching goes this is pretty slick.

The Icarus bit seems to lay it on a bit thick, but whatcha gonna do?

If you enjoy the dystopian vistas of Stand Alone Complex as much as I do, then you should probably take a peak after the break.

Your Earth Seeker Art Break

Earth Seeker
Famitsu was good enough to put up some first look images for an original Wii title called Earth Seeker this week. In development by Crafts & Meisters, word is that the game is an action title scheduled to be released in Japan this Winter.

If the developer can convincingly translate the tiny bit of art being shown, I’d gladly get on board for whatever monster battling situations the game has to offer. Based on what I’ve read so far with Guardian creatures and environmental hazards, the game actually sounds like some potentially amazing apocalyptic Pikman title – so set your fingers to crossed for me.

You can catch a glimpse of some artwork after the break, which is what instantly grabbed me.

Review – Super Mario Galaxy 2

Super Mario Galaxy 2
Anyone who really believes that Japanese game design has a declining role against the success of Western game development needs to dunk their head in a pool of water – specifically the floating pools of water suspended in the air, rotating between connections with other pools as Mario attempts to swim toward the next checkpoint. Somewhere along the way players will also be hitting switches that alter the directional force of gravity while trying to grab a star, and the significance of a rare second mainline Super Mario title during a single hardware cycle becomes as clear as those small floating cubes of water.

Within Mario’s Galaxy, anything can and will happen. And what’s truly surprising is the depth of logic at play while navigating the sea of sudden possibilities that shows the complete lack of inhibition proving one of Nintendo EAD’s greatest design strengths.

For some a building is a place where action takes place around or within. In Super Mario Galaxy 2, bricks break free of structures to create pathways toward star portals, launching players through the roof and into the sea of stars overhead.

Short on filler and stuffed plump with that type of energy, the results are often extraordinary.
