Love in the Age of 8-bit

8-bit Girlfriend
Without question, 8-bit Girlfriend is the oddest game I’ve come across while slurping coffee and catching up on emails from the weekend. Released to the 360 marketplace’s indie section on Sunday, the game is based off a web comic I’ve just seen for the first time, which you can check out over here.

Billed as a comedy-dating simulator, players step into the armor of a “retro knight” and from there on in attempt to court four “retro beauties” – picking through responses to dialogue in order to win either the Princess, Elf, Thief, or Item Shop Girl.

Keep in mind this could be the worst investment of 80 MS Pts ever, but it’s definitely unique enough to warrant a mention.

  1. Interesting. I’ve been meaning to whip something up on XNA but I can’t be bothered to pay the $100 or whatever it costs to run the games on my Xbox 360… and I don’t really care for PC development. Maybe someday. That web comic was mildly entertaining.

  2. Did you ever get anywhere with that bayonetta game idea?

  3. I still have a couple pages in my notebook of ideas/game design, and a bunch of background/sprite work done. But after speaking with the original artist that inspired the whole thing, and the fact that he didn’t/doesn’t have time to “quality control” the use of his artwork, I kind of put it to the side. I don’t know how I’d create brand new sprites in a different style and make it work, seeing that the original artwork is what drove my inspiration in the first place. Maybe if I ever do get a prototype done (the original artist did say I could use his art for private use/testing) and it looks good, who knows, he might give his blessing on the project. However he did state that he was worried about IP infringement as another sticking point in not wanting to be involved.

I’ve got notebooks with game ideas scribbled here and there though… like my GBA/DS 2D side scrolling beat ’em up “God Hand” tribute game. “Devil Fist” ;)
